Channel Five gets a bad reputation but their sitcoms of the past couple of years have been spot on. Angelo's is about to wrap up and has been excellent this year, while last year we had the heart-warming Respectable.

At its heart this is a platonic love story set within a knocking shop. The relationship between the shy clumsy businessman and the naive prostitute is touching but sometimes painfully embarrassing to watch.

For those pondering a second series - it's unlikely to happen. I've been in touch with Channel 5 a couple of times about this show and they say that the creative team has moved on. Quite definitely in one case. The main writer and creator of the show, Harry Thompson, died before it even got to air.

Its a shame that this was the last thing Harry Thompson worked on before his untimely death...but he gave us a great parting gift with this.

I know what people think, a sitcom on channel 5 about prostitutes and a largely unknown cast with someone from Hollyoaks to boot? Hardly a winner. I thought like that too, but this is an incredibly underrated gem, that has more depth than your average Zoo and Nuts reader would have noticed...and more fool them.

The setting may lead to some near the knuckle humour but it is laugh out loud when it does and to counterbalance, at its heart, it is a surprisingly tender sweet love story between the lonely and inept Michael (the brilliant Justin Edwards...check him out as Jeremy Lion on youtube, hilarious; or in The Thick Of It) and the young airheaded working girl Hayley (the surprisingly brilliant Jodi Albert formerly of Hollyoaks-which is sportingly mocked on a couple of occasions in the show)The supporting cast is also excellent.

The price on here is amazingly low and I promise you you will consider it one of your better buys.

A show that leaves an unexpected warm glow

Respectable is a great show. The humour is more gentle than you would think - given the setting. The guy who plays Michael is particularly brilliant and the Easter European character is hilarious. This is a real gem - can't wait for the DVD.

By KaleHawkwood TOP 100 REVIEWER on 13 Oct. 2013
Format: DVD
Michael only wants to talk - about his life, his stalled sexless marriage, his work, his frustrations, and so on.
Hayley`s a friendly hooker in a local, small-scale brothel, with its cheerfully vulgar, hard-faced yet soft-hearted madam - Beatrice Kelley, brilliant - and two other girls, one a big, obnoxious, hilariously scary Serbian called Yelena played by the wonderfully named Barunka O`Shaughnessy, the other an intelligent girl studying to better herself when not turning tricks, played with unforced naturalness by Cordelia Bugeja.
Over six well-written, often very funny episodes, they chat, him in his pants, she suitably dressed for the occasion - there`s a touchingly authentic moment when he surprises her in her appointed room when she`s dressed in her normal civvies, which embarrasses her more than when she`s in her underwear.
This has been criticised for giving a too rosy view of a prostitute`s life, but it never pretends to be more than it is, a semi-realistic comedy with dramatic touches (though the last episode is darker, and in fact seems a little underwritten and hurried in its conclusion) and is more an unusual, frequently quite moving sitcom which just happens to be set in a down-market suburban brothel.
Jodi Albert is perfect as the hopelessly naive ingenue hooker, while Justin Edwards is similarly excellent as her over-talkative, awkward client whose home life with Pippa - Helen Grace, superb - is the cause of his brothel visits. Their rapport shows, and by the final episode of this modestly courageous series, we are rooting for both of them. The moment when she feels ready to tell him her real name is genuinely affecting.

this is a great little show and im glad the dvd has arrived.
i fisrt watched it on channel 5 if im honest purely for the prospect of jodi albert in a small outfit.
that happens....alot...but on the plus side it was also very, very, very funny with some cracking lines that give a good giggle and atleast one huge laugh out loud moment per show.
the acting is top rate and the humour is surprisingly older in style...almost carry on in style at times.
well worth a look if you dont expect a cheap sustitute for soft core porn!!

A hidden gem... saw a couple of episodes on telly a couple of years ago, then took a punt on this DVD. Good Shout: loved every episode - in fact, I sat & watched them end to end (excuse the pun). Very sympathetically handled, with plenty of chuckles. Imagine Butterflies with basques & knob gags :-)
