"Refreshing and wise, "Resilient "takes the words of Jesus Sermon on the Mount right out of the 'nice-but-unrealistic' box we've placed them into, and centers this rich teaching smack into our messy real lives where it belongs. "When a heart is teachable in and through the trials of life, God grows a reservoir of wisdom through which he can move, act, and reveal. Sheridan Voysey is that heart and he shares much truth and wisdom in this book. You will be encouraged in your own heart to keep believing Jesus for your life. Thank you, Sheridan, for leading us to deeper waters of truth in Christ."--Denalyn Lucado, coauthor with Max Lucado of Lucado Treasury of Bedtime Prayers

"Many books have been written on the Sermon on the Mount, but few have focused on its underlying theme of resilience. Sheridan Voysey has done that now in this fine devotional. Through compelling stories and deep biblical reflection, Resilient reveals how Jesus' teaching can build spiritual, emotional, and relational strength when put into practice. I highly recommend it."--Arch Hart, author of Flourish, and Senior Professor of Psychology and Dean Emeritus, Graduate School of Psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary

"There was once a teacher who drew an enormous crowd and he beckoned them to sit on a hillside and learn of him. If you are hurried, stressed, confused--if you need peace, if you're looking for real happiness, listen to the teacher. Sheridan Voysey has captured the essence of what Jesus said to the poor, the brokenhearted--and his words echo across time and into every willing heart. May you be comforted and happy as you sit and listen to the one who loved you most."--Chris Fabry, author of Every Waking Moment and host of Chris Fabry Live!

From the Back Cover

Some days we wake to a world of crystal skies and bright possibilities. And other days it's to rain pelting our windows and thunder rattling our roofs. How can we stay strong when the storms of life hit--when a spouse leaves, a client sues, unemployment strikes, or our dreams fail to come true? Is it possible not just to weather these trials, but bound back even stronger through them?
After facing his own fierce storm, author and broadcaster Sheridan Voysey tried an experiment--he would read Jesus' Sermon on the Mount every day for a month. That experiment continued a second month, then a third, as he discovered Jesus' astounding invitation for weak people to become strong, little people to become great, all of us to find resilience by putting these radical teachings into practice.
Rich with stories and deep with insight, Resilient is designed to recalibrate your callings, relationships, spiritual practices, and life choices. Join Sheridan Voysey in following the One who promises this: Though the rain comes in torrents and the winds beat against you, you will stand, not collapse. You will be resilient.

Straight away it’s worth noting this is not a Christian “self-help” book. Speaking from the experience of his own wounds Sheridan doesn’t pretend that trials and troubles won’t come, that the storms of life will rage. What his writing offers, however, is an insight into how Jesus’ famous words can be applied to our daily lives, can permeate our souls and help the Holy Spirit bring us healing, purpose & a desire to seek out the life we were created to live.

Dividing the message of the Sermon into six sections, Sheridan explores:
“Your Invitation” – Jesus request for us to ‘come’;
“Your Calling” – what Jesus has called us to be and do;
“Your Relationships” – Jesus sanctification of each part of human relations, seeking to make each thing ‘Holy’;
“Your Practices” – Jesus guidance on the Way to live out His purpose for our lives;
“Your Choices” – Jesus guidance, instruction and warnings across the decisions we make, big and small, in our daily lives;
“Your Resilient Life” – guidance for moving Jesus message from our head to our hearts and living out a life shaped by Him no matter what is thrown at us.

Along the way there are questions to ponder, allowing the reader to focus their thoughts on what has been said. Each section concludes with a strong summary which directs us back to Jesus’ desire to help us build the resilience that will see us through the trials of being His disciples, His friends, His people.

Throughout the book Sheridan’s writing is smooth and at times poetic, giving memorable quotes and images, all adding to the impression of exploring the text in the company of a warm, learned friend.

Resilient is the third book by Sheridan Voysey that I have read - my expectations were high after reading his brilliant book, Resurrection Year.
The short daily style readings take us through Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. Voysey provides excellent reflections based around six themes from the Sermon on the Mount drawing from a wealth of relevant Scriptures that add depth to his devotionals.
Voysey is a gifted, insightful writer who is able to get to the heart of the human condition and especially the intersection of life and Christian faith - Resilient does this beautifully. He writes in a warm, engaging, personal way that creates space to hear what he is writing. The examples and stories used are relevant and helped me to relate to and apply the teaching of Jesus in new and fresh ways.
At times I found myself wanting a little more reflection and expansion on the ideas introduced in each reading. I know it was a written as a daily devotional but I find Voysey such a great writer that I wanted more. But then isn’t that the quality of a good writer to leave you wanting more and help you to ponder on his work further?
Voysey provides a clear call not only to read and reflect on Jesus’ teaching but also to put that teaching into practice. As we more fully engage with Jesus and his teaching we find the resilience that the follower of Jesus needs.
I will be recommending Resilient as a great spiritual resource and it will be one that I will go back and read again.

‘Resilient’ is a book of short devotionals, but don’t let that fool you: rather than being self-contained pockets of thought, these short sections go on a journey and build up a picture of a Jesus-shaped life in today’s world. And because it’s Sheridan Voysey writing it - erstwhile radio show host, popular podcaster and speaker - the book is also an invitation to an ongoing conversation on what the Sermon on the Mount is really saying about life in the 21st century, and it pops with ideas. I wasn’t far into the book before realising that I was going to need to make sure that I had a Bible, my journal and Google to hand to keep up with the constant fascinating references, quotations, personalities and anecdotes that Sheridan uses to bring light and shade to those familiar words of Christ so that they stand out in unexpected 3D, like a Magic Eye book for the soul.
And of course, being Sheridan, it won’t stop there - there is to be a guide, and videos, and more podcasts and more discussion so that Resilient can become an important resource for homegroups and churches too. Don’t miss it!

Resilient-your invitation to a Jesus-shaped life is one of those devotional books that you actually can't put down and end up reading continuously within one sitting. Every ‘chapter' pulls you in and either has you raising your hand in agreement or finally making sense of what you've been feeling/thinking and reading in the past.

Based on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount; Resilient takes you on a journey of 90 readings with stories, scripture, insights from the sermon and life pondering questions.

To bounce back from emotional, physical & spiritual storms we need resilience and quoting the book; ‘the blessed life is a resilient life, at its core is a heart for God'.

Personally battling inner turmoil with grief and faith struggles for the past few years this book has repaired my relationship with God, finally hearing his voice again and knowing he'll use my strengths, seek my talents, let my light shine and shape my future into that blessed resilient life. It's really opened my eyes and heart to all aspects of my life and made me listen to that voice (God's) that perhaps I'd stopped hearing as my own inner voices became too loud.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly for anyone struggling, anyone starting their voyage with God, devotional readers or just anyone who wants to be spiritually nourished. It is beautifully written; Sheridan uses his own life experiences, humour and knowledge to take you on a flowing journey of self discovery. An emotional rollercoaster of a ride that will lead you to resilience and a stronger relationship with God.
