Product Description

Resident Evil 3D: The Mercenaries

Manufacturer's Description

For the first time Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D delivers the intense Mercenaries gameplay experience on a handheld console. Featuring re-mastered stages from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, it’s a race against time as players try to defeat as many enemies as possible before the countdown reaches zero. The fast-paced, combat intensive action of Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D is available both as a solo experience or gamers across the world can team up and enjoy two-player co-op via network play.

Gamers will have the opportunity to tackle the game’s missions with legendary Resident Evil characters from past and present. These include Chris Redfield, Krauser, Hunk and, making her debut in a Mercenaries game, Claire Redfield.

While the gameplay will be familiar to those who have previously played Mercenaries, changes have been implemented to take advantage of the new hardware, most notably the transforming the stages and characters to full 3D plus the ability for players to move and shoot and the addition of touch screen functionality to switch weapons on the fly.

Attention:

Purchasers of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, will get a taste of the horror to come thanks to the addition of a playable demo of Resident Evil Revelations.

Having played RE4 on Wii, I couldn't wait to buy this game. I always found myself playing Mercenaries on RE4 and it was so addictive, and even though this is pretty much a non-story line game in the franchise, more of a mini-game I'd say, it's still so addictive to play whenever you have some time to kill. Online multiplayer works great, even months after release! I like the addition of skills and levelling them up, makes the game more replayable.
The graphics are very decent and nice - especially the 3D effect.

All in all a great purchase if you're a fan of the franchise and enjoyed the Mercenaries on RE4.

What on earth are Capcom up to?

Charging full price for what is in effect a mini-game (with many issues touched upon by other reviewers) is just wrong.

As an add on to Revelations this would have been ok but as a full price game it's a complete con.

I feel like asking for my money back and I've never done that in 25 years of gaming.

Avoid like the plague and wait for Revelations is my advice.

Hope sales are poor and Capcom learns a lesson.

As a big RE fan I was very excited when this new portable version of the shooting franchise was released and all in all I wasn't disappointed.

The style the gameplay requires you to kill as many enemies as you can in a limited amount of time. It's an addictive and action filled game that you are bound to like if you enjoy head shotting enemies against the clock. The attraction of beating your previous high scores will have you playing through this relatively short game a good few times.

Essentially Mercenaries is just a slightly expanded mini-game. There's no story mode and just six groups of missions to play. Also, there are only eight characters to choose from each with only one alternative costume. This lack of variety is slightly disappointing from a game which retails at the price of a full release.

The aiming and shooting system works well - you use the circle 3DS pad to aim which feels very intuitive. However, the feature that allows you to move while shooting by pressing L to strafe is useless as you cannot adjust your crosshairs whilst moving. This is a disappointing flaw but it can always be overcome by just stopping and then lining up the headshots.

The graphics of this game are very good and possibly even the best I have seen on the 3DS. However the frame rate is poor which is very annoying as in places the game can stutter. Also enemies can randomly disappear during gameplay which can be infuriating.

A nice feature of the game is the ability to unlock skills and up to three of them to your character. Also there is the ability to play with a buddy on certain missions via a local or online link. Although this does require both players to own the cartridge it does make for a fun addition to the gameplay.

I do not know what has happened to Capcom, but from being annoyed at their extortionate DLC prices on PSN I am now a firm detractor despite having bought many Resident Evil games due to the malice displayed in this particular release. Having one undeletable save to kill second hand sales is a sneaky, underhand disgrace.

Do not buy. It's not a proper Resi game if you buy new. If you buy used it's someone else's not proper Resi game.

Avoid like the plague.

Resident evil:The mercenaries 3D is a great addition to any 3ds collection, and although it has some flaws, the game is as the review title says a good bit of fun.The 3D effect is quite simply outstanding, i was really taken aback by how much depth the 3D effects add. There is also a nice selection of characters and they are Chris,Jill, Barry Burton, Rebecca chambers, Wesker, HUNK, Clair red field and krauser. All characters have alternate costumes and can swap to another characters load out E.G HUNK can have krausers bow and knife.
The controls are ok but my brother (who has big hands) found them a little cramped, this game would have been better if you could have been able to use the circle pad pro accessory like revelations but you cannot sadly.I have not tried the multiplayer yet so i cannot comment on it but judging by what i have seen it looks good.
The main problems that i have found with this game is that there is no story what so ever and you get only one save file that cannot be deleted so it has no re-sale value. As for the arenas you get an assortment of maps from res 4&5 all of which are good.So all in all a really good game for resident evil fans and one of the best 3ds games out-there.
The final score is 7 out of 10.Worth picking up.
