4.0 out of 5 stars What life on the reservation is really like. 19 Nov. 2013

This was an interesting book. I enjoyed the details involved in describing what life is really like on the reservation. This book doesn't romanticize Natives but instead is more realistic while adding in humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, well written 23 May 2013

Love the book. I recommend it for reading. I grew up on the reservation and I can relate to many of the stories in the book. Whether one grew up on the reservation or not, the book provides an insight into what life is like on the reservation as a young person. The stories are told in a hilarious way. I laughed out loud many times.
5.0 out of 5 stars Clever, funny, and insightful 3 April 2014

This is a collection of short stories recounting a childhood growing up in the Navajo reservation. But wait -- it's not what you think. These stories are infused with a tongue-in-cheek dry humor that is often self-deprecating and always clever without even seeming to try. Lefthand paints a sometimes desolate picture of poverty and desert spaces too wide to echo or encompass, but balances that ache with an ability to mock pretty much everything without ringing false with disrespect or bitterness toward circumstances or culture. Some pieces will seem almost alien in their strangeness unless your young years were similar, but other moments will resound in the universal memory of adolescence or childhood.

This was a very enjoyable read. I really loved the characters and I'll probably go back and re-read this again some day.
