Product Description

Review

'Research Methods in Education contains much theoretical material, but this is supported by many practical examples and down-to-earth guidance. It is very clearly written, and demystifies the theory aspects of education research. The 200 pages of supplementary material are particularly practically focused, and are a substantial improvement on the previous edition of the book - if you already have a copy of the 5th edition, I would suggest you consider upgrading ... If you plan to undertake serious educational research in your discipline, Research Methods in Education is an invaluable addition to your bookshelf.' - Bioscience Education, The Higher Education Academy

'This great book (in both senses) now reaches its sixth edition - and that marks real progress ... The strength of the book remains its highly detailed account of many research methods. This new edition sees that account taken yet further - with new contents of w-based research as well as on sampling, interviews and surveys, and extra on various other kinds of approach.' - British Journal of Educational Technology

'I believe 'Research Methods in Education' is a very impressive volume. Detailed, instructive, rigorous, engaging; graduate students as well as their professors will surely learn a lot from it' - International Journal of Research and Method in Education

This book is brilliant, well written and incredibly comprehensive. The authors manage to provide an incredible amount of information in the one package - it takes some reading! Each section is covered in detail with references and examples and is supported by the slides on the companion website (available without buying the book). These are tricky and complex concepts and the language can be challenging. However the authors manage to retain the sense that they're talking to and about real people and I'm actually enjoying reading the prose style. The fact that it's in the 7th edition testifies to how useful this book has been to countless researchers and students. You probably should get it if you're considering it.

This book written in a very organized style, has all the topics and interesting points for researchers in education.
Qualitative and quantitative research for social sciences are well explained and have helped me with my Phd. You can follow the summary of each chapter reading the useful power point presentations of the web site.

Wonderful book which explores the fine details, nuances and ongoing debates of research. Most importantly perhaps it can be used in all disciplines not simply education. Exploration of qualitative research is especially strong. Easy to read and understand, not cheap but still highly recommended.

Very impressed with this it's very well written and very understandable for those new to research (or like me, where it's been a long time since I last studied!). Lacks the 'dryness' of some of the larger texts I've seen and does bring the subjet to lifewith some excellent examples.

This is the 'Bible' for all those undertaking M.Ed qualifications. I have many books of this nature in my bookcase; this is the only one on my bedside table. Thorough, readable, full of useful and accessible advice - if you are wondering which 'one' book to buy over all the ones in the university library, then this is the one - and it will be noticeable in its absence.

This is very long book 638 pages with 26 chapters, but the book is a textbook for researchers. It is full of bullet points and says it is backed up by a website, but the website is just a repeat of what is in the book.

Chapter 6, for example, describes validity and reliability, but does not define validity: Accuracy and precision are not defined and hardly mentioned. The relationship between all 4 is not mentioned and the book is very light on what statistical techniques are needed to measure validity.

Despite my reservations, the book is good starting point for researchers.

A big improvement on the fifth edition with lots of new material. It's fairly clear and easy enough to follow. I think it's an excellent starting point for researchers in education and students alike. I found it useful for my master's work. It's the most comprehensive book on the subject and so if you're on a budget, buying this edition instead of the 7th will save you money without disadvantaging you academically.
