Thomas Pickering sure knew how to write a compelling story. One that happens to be true too. From the remarkable ‘Prologue’ onwards I was gripped by this book, devouring it in one session.
I’ve read many books about WW2 life - in the RAF or as a Prisoner Of War. This great book has both these topics and much more besides. It has an overall quality to match the very highest of the genre. Here I’m thinking of Guy Gibson’s ‘Enemy Coast Ahead’ or Paul Brickhill’s ‘Reach For The Sky’.
The author was clearly a courageous man – but tells his story with modesty and a generous helping of Service humour. ‘Rescued By The Enemy: My Battle For Survival’ is more than just a punchy title, it is a real part of Tom’s remarkable memories.
Highly Recommended.

How Tom Pickering survived a plane crash and nearly five years in WW2 German POW camps. To survive a 'plane crash was one miracle. To survive four hours in the freezing North Sea and remain conscious was another. To be spotted and rescued by a German ship was another. Clearly, someone up there didn't want Tom to die.

I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you.
My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it.
If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give
If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give.
Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away.
Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way

On balance, I enjoyed the book, but unlike the war it was not long enough, yet in some ways too long. My father was a pilot, and like many who served during the war he never talked about. By the time I wanted to know more he was no longer with us, so it left a void. That is what made the book appealing to download. That and the fact it was free.
I understand why the author was unable to continue much past the time he was shot-down: had he done so I would have rated the book more highly. It is anecdotal and reads like a diary. I found it gave me an amusing insight of what airmen must have gone through: at one moment total organisational chaos, the next knowing you might die within seconds.
I am glad I read it though, and it is a pity these brave people are no longer with us.

I found this a most interesting account of Tom's war time experiences written in a way that let me imagine I was there with him. I could relate to his time spent Lincolnshire as I remember some of the war time spent in Cleethorpes and know quite a few of the places that he mentions. This is a human story of an airman who had a miraculous escape from death, and I would recommend it to anybody who is interested in the history of the 2nd world war.

A fascinating insight into a period of which I have no first hand experience. Of course, the second world war has been well covered by films, but this was a direct personal view and not some invented story. How someone coped with the very real chance of not coming back from a mission I don't know. I enjoyed the read, and the fact that the author's son made the effort to complete the story makes it all the more real. How brave they were in those days!

An excellent book about a rear gunners survival in the face of all odds. I couldn't put it down once I'd started it. Written very humbly by a man who didn't recognise his own bravery or how much this country owes to his like.

Very compelling reading. I was gripped by this story and found it to be extremely interesting and informative. Written by somebody who knows from first hand experience what life was like in these most difficult and harrowing of times.

Although it is possibly a man's book, much more than a woman's. As I did skip some of the jargon about aeroplane's.
