All i can say is WOW!! It is written in such great visual detail it puts the reader in the authors shoes. Everything from getting catapaulted from a carrier deck to hiding in the jungle as enemy soldiers walk just inches past him, you are right there with him, pounding heart and all! I literally gave a heavy sigh of releif at countless lucky close calls, and the final rescue will have you mentally screaming encouragement!
This has to be my new favourite book and one of the few i can read over and over again.
This new book will no doubt be made into a blockbuster movie once word gets around about this already famous mission (you heard it here first!)
And the first 25% of the book he seemed obsessed with writing thinly veiled criticisms of his wingman iceman.
The theme of what are people thinking about him crops up through out the book , as if over explaining that it wasn't his fault he got shot down. Exposing what I can only assume is an inferiority complex.
Even stating what other people reportedly said about him in a good light "That guys got spunk they thought"
That aside the story as it stands whilst on the run is very readable.
There is a decent epilog at the end and the story of the captured sandy who then spent years as a POW looks like the real best seller here

After 40 hours of hiding, running, and acting as a ground FAC guiding fighter-bombers that arrived in force to defend him, he was miraculously rescued by a very brave USAF Jolly Green helicopter crew. This books tells his story, and it's one hell of a story!
For what it's worth, I was an RF-4C USAF fighter /reconnaissance pilot, who flew many missions in that same area, plus, many others in SVN and NVN. I and other pilots/WSOs always dreaded the possibility that we might suffer the same rotten fate as this author, Kenny Fields, did. We all knew that if shot down, there was a strong probability that we'd die with the plane, but also if we made it safely to the ground, the enemy was inclined to summarily execute us, or take us prisoner and treat us very brutally. Kenny knew the same possibilities, and when his moment of fate arrived, he was naturally scared, but he was also a determined and smart survivor, which played a major role in his escape and evasion followed by his eventual rescue.
The language and tone of this book vividly represent how it actually "felt," and how it actually was, for Kenny Fields and for many others. It's hard to put this book down, once the reading has begun. It goes to show that planning for the worst is what smart people do, and that good planning and thoughtfull actions play major roles in survival during the worst of times during a war.
Don't miss reading this terrific book. If you liked BAT-21, you'll love THE RESCUE OF STREETCAR-304! You'll feel like you're on the ground with Navy pilot Kenny Fields, but you won't be shot at, as he was!
Great story for anyone interested in the military and Vietnam, especially if you like air planes.
Easy read and hard to put down, you'll feel like you were right there with him.
In lieu of asking "why" of it all...these guys were simply the greatest...matching any of the heroics of WWI or WWII..in fact, perhaps more.
A must read for those who appreciate was American servicemen and servicewomen (in the case of Iraq and Afghanistan) have done.
Again..."brave me do"..then, now and in the future.
