Firstly, the instructions are dire! I am reasonably computer literate but could not set this up without help. A friend had bought one and eventually managed to set his up, so offered to help me. I would not have this this without his help.
Once set up I tried it out by plugging it in in the bedroom, where I wanted to use it. Unfortunately, it just didn't work. I then tried it in the second bedroom and had no luck there either. Finally I plugged it in in the bathroom and seem to have a reasonable amount of success with it here. It works only intermittently so I'm disappointed as I was sure it would work 100% upstairs.
Curiously, when I use this repeater, it changes my location on my iPad to Tel Aviv.... my actually location is Barcelona! I reset the location repeatedly but it is determined that I live in Tel Aviv!
You see, there are numerous different paths one can follow to set up the Repeater, be it wired or wireless, yet the path I chose informed me I needed to follow a path starting with point A2, through to A12 (Or something similar), yet nowhere on the doublesided, full colour instruction leaflet was point A2 - my starting point!
15 minutes of internet searching later and I was finally up and running.
The product itself works perfectly as anticipated, providing a more powerful wifi connection to my rather sluggish wifi enabled PC, which is rather far away from my router.
Having an ethernet port on the side of the Repeater adds to it's value for me, which is why I initially chose the product.
The connection obtained using this Repeater increased my wifi speed by roughly 25%, which, for the price was what I would have expected.
Do: Buy this product if you are of a technological mind.
Do Not: Buy this product if you are unsure of the difference between wifi and hifi.
So I plugged this Repeater in upstairs next to the computer in the study, which picks up a signal through a Netgear dongle from my Talk Talk router (hard wired to my computer downstairs as above).
Bingo - the Netgear found the signal and I pressed "Apply". Set Up Wizard for Repeater appeared. Entered Username and Password "admin", followed the instructions and ended up by keying in my TalkTalk password and hey presto the study computer was now connected to the internet via the Repeater. No keying in IP addresses or all that nonsense!
I then set the Network settings on laptops and ipads to the Repeater rather than to the TalkTalk router and they now work all over the house whereas before the signal "fell out" in those rooms upstairs and down furthest from the TalkTalk router.
When I switched computer off I thought the connection would drop out but it hasn't - it is there 24/7 so long as the Repeater is switched on.
20 minutes to do the lot.
Now connected our smartphones and tv to the Wirelss Router and receiving a much stronger wifi signal - even in the garden!
Overall, whereas our wifi on the phones and ipad was 3 bars, we now generally see 4 or the full5 bars!
Biggest problem for me was that I had set my wireless router to channel 13 to avoid interference from neighbours, but the repeater couldn't seem to "see" WiFI channels that high, it could see my neighbour's networks okay! Changing the channel on my router fixed it after much futile playing about with the settings on repeater!
Also ensure that your router is broadcasting the SSID (this is default) so that the repeater can see the router, the repeater didn't seem to have the ability to manually set the SSID and password.
I think I had to switch off the DHCP on the repeater so that the router dynamically assigned IP addresses itself.
The signal from the repeater is okay, not particularly strong but is far enough for my purposes. My Sky router will only cover the front of the house, but the repeater placed on the upstairs landing is visible throughout the house. Haven't had a chance to test the throughput but browsing on my phone seems to be speedy enough.
At thirty quid I'm happy enough in that it gets the job done without the financial outlay of other devices.
On some installations you can't use one of those ingenious range extenders which operate through the electric wiring. So you need a wireless solution. The advantage of this one is that you are not tied to one location: you can plug it in near where you want to work with your ipad or phone or laptop and away you go.
BTW, for some reason that well-known maker of phones and tablets which is named after a fruit won't allow apps which enable you to calibrate wifi signal strength. However, they do have one app which does the job: search WifiMedic.
One thing you might want to watch out for: Amazon appears to show this product with a European adapter. However, they now seem to be supplying it in the UK with the UK adapter only (i.e. without the continental adapter). They will, however, provide the European adapter on request. Very helpful service.
Excellent price. all in all, what's not to like.
