Written by a man who leased the domain of Berenger Sauniere, and lived and worked amongst the local populace of Rennes Le Chateau this book should have been an authoritative one. It is filled with information and you can feel his enthusuasm pour out of the page. He is very knowledgeable, having access to documents and papers that the vast majority of us will never be able to get our hands on. He gives his opinion about the affair and makes it clear that he holds no sway with the religious theories that abound. He proposes a combination of simony (selling mass illegaly) and a find of material value. There is such a wealth of information in this book but there is a problem with a great deal of it, evidence. For the most part he makes statements without backing them up. Without evidence nothing he says can be proven, and that is a shame because what he has to say is very interesting indeed. This book is a fascinating as it is frustrating. It's not a bad read, but it could have been so much better.

Lots of interesting information and background to events in history that are becoming daily more important. The book has been carefully crafted to bring the historical background to the long saga surrounding Rennes-le-Chateau and Languedoc right up to the present era.
