5.0 out of 5 stars One book to rule them all... 13 Mar. 2015

I think Guptill's "Rendering in Pencil" is quite possibly the finest single-volume treatment of the topic of pencil drawing ever written. This work is very similar to his monumental "Rendering in Pen and Ink." He treats perspective and shading with academic detail and moves on to just about every technique imaginable, using every drawing material imaginable (lithographic crayon, graphite wash, etc., etc., etc.). He focuses on theory and technical proficiency, so don't expect chapters dedicated to life drawing basics or how to 'draw trees.' It's mostly about accurately rendering form and value--you know, the 'meat and potatoes" of drawing. The lessons and concepts in this book are for both the serious beginner and professional artists looking to polish their work. There are a great many books about pencil artistry, but you can get nearly everything you need here in one book. It's a shame that it is out of print, though the used prices are typically pretty good given the condition of the copies on offer. Mine came in great condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deservedly a classic 5 Feb. 2016

Really great book on drawing with pencils. I can see why it is regarded as a classic--it includes an enormous amount of information on everything from basics on materials (papers, pencils, etc) to how to use them effectively. I'm working through it slowly (as a hobbyist I'm in no rush), and find it very helpful. Highly recommended.

This is a terrific book and I recommend it. Not sure why I had never stumbled on it before but very glad my instructor recommended it.
