Let's not brush aside the successes of Eighth Wonder. Stay With Me was No 1 in Japan and Italy, Will You Remember was No 1 in Japan and No 9 in Italy, When The Phone Stops Ringing was No 1 in Japan, I'm Not Scared reached No 1 in Italy, No 2 in Switzerland, No 5 in Germany and No 7 in the UK. Cross My Heart was No 6 in Switzerland, No 10 in Italy and No 13 in the UK. Baby Baby reached No 2 in Japan and No 13 in Italy, and Use Me hit No 3 in Japan.
In addition, the Pet Shop Boys were the writers and co-producers of I'm Not Scared; PWL's Phil Harding (the mixer on many Stock Aitken Waterman releases) was the co-producer and mixer of I'm Not Scared; and PWL's Pete Hammond (another familiar name on SAW releases) remixed Cross My Heart, Baby Baby and Use Me.
All that adds up to justification for revisiting the band's output in reissue form. Cherry Red has already remastered and reissued the album Fearless with some bonus mixes added, and now offers us this Remix Anthology including more of the band's 12" versions. Although a two-disc version and some more of the rarer mixes would have been nice for devoted fans, it's obvious that the label felt they also had to include the bigger and more obvious songs to appeal to the casual buyer. It does mean we do get some mixes that were already on Fearless, but we also get some great rarities.Read more ›
Well, Eighth Wonder are not such a big shot, neither in name nor considering their works: this 80s band around Patsy Kensit did not release much more than one studio album. Therefore the basis for a compilation is so small that “Cross My Heart” comes in two and “I’m Not Scared” even in three different versions, where 10”- and disco mix are truly quite similar. What is more, all the remixes lack that certain indefinable something: they are mostly longer versions with a deviant backbeat and cute little sound effects, just like they used to do it in the eighties. I don’t consider that really worthwile, therefore the anthology would predominantly be interesting for hunters and gatherers of 80s rarities and very big fans of the band.
Yet especially the gatherers might complain that the anthology contains roughly only half of Eighth Wonder’s existing remixes. And will probably start a discussion about “why this track and not the other one”? Personally I would not go for a Volume 2 of this collection, simply because it can only end up in more variations of the same old tracks – which are, even according to 80s standards, neither pearls of songwriting nor haunting melodies you would want to hear over and over again.
At least the album comes with a good sound, far better than the CD adaptation of their studio album “Fearless” which was also enhanced with remix recordings. So after all and regarding all aspects, one can end up with a medium rating for this CD.
