This is a great read for anyone with an interest in Mancunian history, telling the tale of Manchester's characters and districts, trials and tribulations from 1840 to 1905. Written in a chatty rather than literary style, the book outlines the changing geography of the city and its rise from the world's first industrial city to a cultured city of world reknown. Hayes orginally wrote it as a memoir for his family but it is very useful as a reminder of how the city looked and felt when it was the focus of world attention.
