4.0 out of 5 stars Rembrandt's Enterprise 28 Dec. 2012
By Ulla Melchior - Published on Amazon.com

Interesting lecturre, good examples and nice explainations. I like to recommend this for anybody interested in Rembrandt and the conditions of the artists around him
4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking book 13 Feb. 2016
By P. Stern - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A challenging, allusive work that occasionally frustrates but that rewards careful reading. Alpers never traces a straight line in her arguments; this is not the book to consult for a description of Rembrandt's life or practices. But the analysis of the paintings is brilliant, and I found Alpers' thoughts on value and painterly authority very stimulating. A book to roll around on your tongue and savor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before Koons and Hirst, there was Rembrandt... 9 Dec. 2008
By Reich Claude - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is at the same time erudite and easy to read. It studies Rembrandt's relationship to his art (his peculiar touch, his brushstrokes), to the theater (its influence on the scenes depicted in his paintings), to his studio (the part of his assistants, his attitude towards them) and to the art market (he was famously said to love only three things, "freedom, art and money"). Well served by twelve coloured close-ups presented at the beginning of the book as well as by numerous black and white illustrations, the text is riveting, full of insightful information and analyses. I own many books on the Dutch master and this one is undoubtedly a favourite.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real answer for a false problem.. 26 July 2003
By Jose L. de Dias - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Are you tired of the fuss about real or false Rembrandts? Then read prof. Svetlana book. First of all, Rembrandt was allways interested in such confusion and gladly endorsed it. If he could get a fee for all false stuff under his name or painted by his pupils, that would be fine. So, dont worry, in the end, all the Rembrandts in one way or another are authentic...
