It is very extensive (and too much for my liking) on who commissioned the paintings and his location at the time, and you have to admire his investigations, in trying to nail them all down. If you are looking for that kind of book, this could be the book for you. The description at the top of this page is pretty good, if you want more, which I agree with.
For me I was more interested in knowing and understanding why he is considered so great, including the reading of his pictures. They are touched upon of course, but I thought the book became too bogged down as to the reason he painted the picture (money mostly, it seems), and not so much interpreting why he painted it/them that way or his techniques. I know which pictures of his do thrill me, but it is a hit and miss affair I have to admit, and I thought this book might bridge the gaps to the ones that escaped me to date. It did help, but not enough. That said, I do enjoy having all his pictures here, and now I know where to find (most of) them, although this is now an old book, and I know one or two have since moved.
