I read this one again and again, with a grin on my face, and to the accompaniment of giggles, chuckles and tears of laughter. This is Heyer at her most clever and witty. On the surface, it appears to be another light, romantic adventure, but without losing credibility or delight, and never belittling her story or hero/heroine, Heyer manages not only to pull fun at her genre, but her plot, her characters and her own writing. Even her characters can't help but join in! Nothing is what it seems, no-one says what they think (except Nicky, who blithely and naively skips through the pages without realising he is part of a tremendous satirical romp), and the whole is a delightful, witty, clever froth. This is fun!
If you like this you must read 'The Talisman Ring': Sarah Thane is as delightful as Elinor, and the plot as outrageously funny.

Surprised and disappointed by shockingly bad typesetting/proofreading - full of incorrect, missing or misspelled words. Arrow Books is part of the Random House Group and I see the typesetting was sent to a firm in Essex. Wherever the fault in the publishing chain, the Heyer estate would be unhappy - as is this purchaser who bought to replace an earlier tattered old paperback .

I have read this extremely delightful GH regency novel many times in paperback. It has wit, charm, intrigue, villains, the lot. Was delighted to see it on Kindle and buy it to read again. Was so disappointed to discover that of all the Kindle books I have bought, this has to absolutely be the worst produced one. One expects a few typing errors in a Kindle book, there are always some. But no other one has had this many! It was obviously not proof read! Every single page had at least one, most times two or even three errors. As I know the book so well I could even tell there were complete sentences missing, in a couple of places whole paragraphs repeated. Many many times completely wrong words used - I.e. spell checker probably employed, which would not pick up that its actually the wrong word used! It completely destroyed my reading pleasure. I highly recommend that no one buys this Kindle edition until someone puts it right. A waste of my money! I hope the other five I bought at the same time have been better produced! Don't like wasting my money!

This is one of my favourite Heyer books. I loved the adventure! Nicky is a brilliant, from his first burst into the book - and his arguments with John are fantastic. And the kite! Once you have read it you'll understand. The motives of Lord Carlyon seem odd, to say the least and Elinors reasons for searching for a job as a governess seems strange. You'll have to read the book to find out what they are. However all ends well in the end and this lighthearted romp took me away from reality for a day. Since I first read it five years ago, after picking it up from one of my Granny's shelves, I have read it several times. I recommend it to all Heyer fans!

I should have read the synopsis before buying this. Having read a lit of Georgette Heyer I just assumed that I would enjoy it. The premise the story us based on is weak and so did not really engage my interest.

I enjoy the story but find the constant mistakes in the proof-reading so irritating. It is not just one or two but all the way through the book. This makes the Kindle version bad value. I wish there was a way of correcting as one reads.

Georgette Heyer may be dubbed the queen of historical romance but I was very disappointed. While the plot was promising - a deathbed marriage, missing documents, spys and even secret passages - her writing style is, to be kind, rather old fashioned. But then the novel was written in 1946. For my taste, too much of the backstory is explained in interminable use of rather stilted dialogue and there is an over fondness for exclamation marks. Neither could I believe in the final offer of marriage between Elinor and Carlyon as Heyer doesn't convey any underlying attraction between the two protagonists prior to the proposal. Not a particularly good read and as this is the second Heyer novel that I've struggled through I suspect it will be a long time until I try another.

This is the second Regency book I've read and thoroughlly enjoyed it. Full of adventure and a little bit of romance thrown in. Lots of characters both like and odious. Very well written although took a little bit of perseverance during the first 30 pages or so, but after that it read very well.

Elinor is a very pround person who finds herself boarding the wrong coach and subsequently her destination isn't the one she'd intended. Before the night is out she is married and widdowed and in charge of a house that needs much work doing to it.

Very good read. Would recommend.
