About the Author

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar (1901-1962) is considered one of the most significant Turkish novelists of the twentieth century. Also a poet, short-story writer, essayist, literary historian, and professor, he created a unique cultural universe in his work, combining a European literary voice with the Ottoman sensibilities of the Near East.

For all those interested in understanding the differences between the East and the West of the world, this book is superb. It was written by Nobel Prise Ahmed Tanpinar who was born in 1902 in Turkey during the Ottoman Empire and died in 1962 during the Modern Republic of Turkey. This book shows us how Tradition and Modernity need to be conjugated: it is not possible to eliminate, eradicate Tradition. They must blend one into the other. Turkey represents THE country between EAST and WEST and this book will help us understand how we gain insights into culture and how we can understand and find common ground with other cultures.

While the story is most obviously a metaphor for how mid 20th Century Turkey society coped with the rush to modernization there is much that could be levelled at the 21st century UK from launching a singing career of someone with no talent, to comments on the architectural of business buildings, and nonsense business mantras.
My single criticism is that it was a little hard to keep up with the array of characters. However I made this much worse for myself by not initially realising that “Hanim” wasn’t actually a new family surname (one that seemed to double the number of women present) but an honorific added to those we had already encountered. I do recommend that you read the useful appendix that lists the many possible honorifics and suffixes before starting the main text.
