3.0 out of 5 stars A very passive story 28 Dec. 2012
By Cedarlila - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This made me think of something I've read before, but I can't recall what, or where I read it. The plot of the story was awfully familiar, though, right up to how it ended. Because it is a very passive storyline, with the female character barely fleshed out, I wasn't thrilled with it. I think it could easily have been longer, with more inter-personal conflict between the married protagonists, and less info-dumping as they went on. Some exploration on their part at each stop, for instance. I didn't feel any tension for them, and the end was more of a relief than a victory.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Combination and a Good Read 28 Oct. 2012
By Martin Schiller - Published on Amazon.com

"Refuge" presented a fresh concept in the Vampire genre, by not only combining it with sci-fi but also with time travel. It reminded me a little of the the HG Wells classic "The Time Machine" and some of the places the author takes us are unexpected and interesting. "Refuge" is a short book and a quick read, with an ending that I didn't see coming. For fans of sci-fi and vampire (both of which I enjoy), this book is worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Read 7 Nov. 2012
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This book takes on the subject of vampires with a whole new twist. Forget Twilight, this book lures you in with characters that we can all relate to, especially in their fight-or-flight response to an ever-changing world and time line. For anybody who wants a new twist on an old subject, this book is for you!! We can hope that Mr. Gaffen continues to grace us with his writings for many years in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story for fans of the supernatural and science fiction 22 Oct. 2012
By Jill McKnight - Published on Amazon.com

This story combines the classic duality of vampires (as both heroes and villains) with a caveat of time travel. The past is dangerous; the future, unknown. And the present is unpleasant and getting worse by the minute!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great short story. 28 Dec. 2012

The interesting thing is that this is Mr. Gaffen's first novel, written when he was still in high school, gives us a interesting view of the vampire mythos.
