'Contender for classic status ... this is a superb volume, overseen with masterly control by its editor ... Real experts summarise their knowledge in a uniformly readable and authoratative fashion, and the prose is enriched by a mass of excellent and intelligent illustrations.' – History Today

If you are looking for a one volume survey which contains the findings of the latest up-to-date research, together with basic information that the layman can understand and be informed by, then look no further. Andrew Pettegree has brought together an international-class group of Reformation experts who not only have command of their respective areas, but who are adept at putting across complex ideas in simple language, without seeming condescending or patronising. From the state of the pre-Reformation Church, to the roles of art and visual imagery, through Luther, Calvin et al, this beautifully illustrated volume will keep drawing you back to dip into its knowledge time after time. Whilst it is not to be read at a single sitting - it simply is not that sort of book - it should be as useful to the non-specialist as it will become 'The Word' to the next generation of University students and researchers. Thought provoking and informative - it would be my Reformation books of the moment. Highly recommended for anyone's bookshelves.

I bought this book because I hoped it would provide me with an overview of up-to-date Reformation scholarship and this hope was certainly not disappointed. It is a wonderful book. The essays cover the topic comprehensively, each one providing terrific detail and a lot of information. I particularly liked the fact that there are essays here covering not just the course of the Reformation in individual countries, but also on relevant intellectual currents, and on its societal impact. The style is certainly academic but very accessible. The book is not cheap but a real gift for anyone interested in seeking real understanding of this topic. One gripe is that the binding of the book is a little disappointing. It is difficult to read the entire page without being pretty brutal with the spine, making it an awkward reference tool.
