Review

'Anyone who wants a solid reference book for Hebrew grammar would benefit from this book. … the authors provide numerous examples in illustrating their teaching points. Whenever possible [they] provide Hebrew terminology alongside the English terms to help students benefit more from this textbook. … overall I would recommend [it], since there seems to be no better Hebrew reference grammar which has a better value than this one.' This book is an excellent resource. I would not try and learn Hebrew Grammar from it but if in the course of studies you want to go away and look something up then this is a fantastic book. The grammatical terminology is given both in English and whenever possible in Hebrew as well and although technical in character this technicality has been kept to a minimum. I have studied Biblical Hebrew (Two years at University level) and have spent a year studying Modern Hebrew in Israel and I feel that this book really feels a gap. Not a study or text book but a manual to turn to when I have a specific grammar question or to use concurrently with my course when I want to go deeper into a particular point of grammar. Certainly there are points of sentence structure and syntax that I only understand now after consulting with this book.
Another feature that I have found useful is classification given over Higher Registers, that is more form usages in Modern Hebrew. This book would be of some (or indeed a great of) use to a number of people, teachers of Modern Hebrew who could use it in class, their students as a supplement and resource for self study and possibly even native speakers who could turn to it on questions of style in more formal Hebrew. The one caveat I would make is that some prior knowledge of grammar and grammatical terms would be useful before starting to read this book. However if you do not like approaching a language though its grammar then it is unlikely that you turn to this particular book. I have found having access to a reference grammar very useful and I highly recommend it.

I bought this book for my daughter. I'm not expert in hebrew. This must be good because it's advised for students

5.0 out of 5 stars High reccomendition from a student with language cognitive disabilities! 19 Feb. 2016

I am a disabled veteran with puncturing head wound on the left side of head with prosthetic skull on the same side. I mention this because language is most affected by this type of injury on that area of the head. Am taking Modern Hebrew classes at a small liberal arts college in a degree program and have been searching for other resources/books to help supplement my learning and understanding. Being in the second semester....I wish I would have found this book in the first semester! It is that good! It is easy enough for someone like me with severe Traumatic brain Injury but enough depth and detail for a college level introductory course. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book 8 Jan. 2014

The examples are particularly helpful. The discussion of "registers" - the level of formality of language and so on - is also interesting and helpful. Bolotsky's 501 Hebrew verbs is of similar quality and usefulness. These books help to span the gap between studying Hebrew and really being able to use it. However, to get the most from this book, one must devote a good deal of effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for students 29 Oct. 2014

Very useful, especially if wanting to look up verb conjugations. It goes over all aspects of the grammar and is good if using it as a student in university or just for personal use.

5.0 out of 5 stars a worthwhile reference 3 Jun. 2005

Such a reference book of Modern Hebrew has been needed for a long time. The only previous reference grammar in English, by Lewis Glinert, while an excellent work, is expensive, very technical, very heavy on syntax, and often outdated. This new volume is easy to use, and includes tons of useful and helpful information. It is not a comprehensive grammar with every last detail, but will still be of great value to the student of Hebrew, from the beginner to the advanced level. Recommended.

Glad to finally have a Hebrew grammar text in addition to dictionaries. Having learned a lot of Hebrew by listening, I came to understand there were grammatical points I needed to fill in.
