Product Description

Featuring infamous referees Pierluigi Collina and Howard Webb, who provoked controversy after his performance at the 2010 World Cup Final, THE REFEREES exposes fans to a new dimension of the beautiful game. For the first time, filmmakers have been given unrivalled access to go behind the scenes at an international tournament, following the refereeing teams on and off the pitch as they compete for the prize to referee the final.  Revealing the mic’ed conversations between referees, players and their assistants, this film delves into the referees’ world as they face abuse from managers, death threats from fans and their every decision to be scrutinized around the world.

As a (grassroots) football referee, I was delighted that this film gives a never-seen-before glimpse at the lives of the world's top officials at a major international finals (Euro 2008).

It follows in detail the progress of England's Howard Webb (who went on to referee the World Cup Final in 2010), and the way his family followed and supported him throughout the tournament - despite incidents.

There are also clips of several other of Europe's top referees pre-match and even communicating to each other through their radios throughout the games. This is unique and really very interesting.

In the extras the referees involved express their pleasure at the way the film has turned out, and say it gives a fair reflection of the work they do - before, during and after games. It's not often they get this opportunity.

Hopefully, a lot of people after seeing this will never look at referees in the same way again!

A unique view from the middle and looking in on the middle. This dvd is about pressure - the pressure of a slow motion review of your split second performance under the gaze of the world's media. Even when you are right you can be so wrong that you receive death threats and the criticism of a nation's prime minister. Every ref will want to watch this. The problem is that it has taken three years to get it out - a documentary of the World Cup Finals surely could have been produced by now.

A good insight into what can go on behind the closed doors of the refs room. Too many fans assume referees don't care about their performance or if they make a mistake, they should watch this and maybe they'll see that referees strive to get the decisions right and want a game to be enjoyable for the paying public.

I was interested in this DVD being a referee myself and to be honest bought it thinking it may be interesting,it was brilliant! I would recommend the film to any player of lower league football and also those of you who have screamed at referees in the past over "poor decisions" it will open your eyes to a whole new view of the game we all love! The ups and downs of being a referee and the team work involved to succeed! I will look forward to the next one following the World Cup.

A very interesting and insightful look into the "third" team on every football pitch. This film has unprecedented "access all areas" to the life of a Professional Referee at a high profile international tournament, showing the highs and lows that any referee could face.
The match footage with the audio overlay between the referee, assistants and fourth official shows how much closer match officials work now with the microphones, discussing every decision and seeing more than in previous tournaments.
The "off the pitch" footage of family and friends shows the forgotten about human side to referees, who are vilified week in week out by football fans across the globe, for making honest decisions and honest mistakes. The most powerful line comes very early on in the film from Massimo Busacca (Swiss Referee) "We are not Gods, we make mistakes".
I'd recommend this film to any football fan, player, or referee to see what the world is like in the eyes of "the man in the middle".

Provides a great insight in to the behind-the-scenes world of a professional football referee. As an aspiring referee myself, wishing to reach the Professional Game someday, this is a brilliant and inspiring DVD, following one of Britain's (arguably) all-time best referee, Howard Webb.
