Featuring infamous referees Pierluigi Collina and Howard Webb, who provoked controversy after his performance at the 2010 World Cup Final, THE REFEREES exposes fans to a new dimension of the beautiful game. For the first time, filmmakers have been given unrivalled access to go behind the scenes at an international tournament, following the refereeing teams on and off the pitch as they compete for the prize to referee the final. Revealing the mic’ed conversations between referees, players and their assistants, this film delves into the referees’ world as they face abuse from managers, death threats from fans and their every decision to be scrutinized around the world.

It follows in detail the progress of England's Howard Webb (who went on to referee the World Cup Final in 2010), and the way his family followed and supported him throughout the tournament - despite incidents.
There are also clips of several other of Europe's top referees pre-match and even communicating to each other through their radios throughout the games. This is unique and really very interesting.
In the extras the referees involved express their pleasure at the way the film has turned out, and say it gives a fair reflection of the work they do - before, during and after games. It's not often they get this opportunity.
Hopefully, a lot of people after seeing this will never look at referees in the same way again!
The match footage with the audio overlay between the referee, assistants and fourth official shows how much closer match officials work now with the microphones, discussing every decision and seeing more than in previous tournaments.
The "off the pitch" footage of family and friends shows the forgotten about human side to referees, who are vilified week in week out by football fans across the globe, for making honest decisions and honest mistakes. The most powerful line comes very early on in the film from Massimo Busacca (Swiss Referee) "We are not Gods, we make mistakes".
I'd recommend this film to any football fan, player, or referee to see what the world is like in the eyes of "the man in the middle".
