Review

Rod Dreher

Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

A furious, profane, smart and hilariously smart-aleck defense of working-class

white culture.

"PDXS"

A funny, engagingly written polemic....Goad should be congratulated and thanked

for cutting through the numerous taboos that prevent an honest discussion of race in

this country.

Ethan G. Machado

Our Town

Dares to rewrite American history, take on government greed and lambaste white liberals....Goad's eight-cylinder prose intentionally rattles the reader, driving home a message that challenges the conventional wisdom of many a Honda Accord owner.

"Crib Magazine"

In another life, this book was a U-Haul packed to the gills with manure and TNT, left idling near a major government building, or a Smokecraft beef jerky-sponsored monster truck revved and ready to roll over the stuccoed suburban palace where Jeff Foxworthy sleeps.

This book is anti-racist. There's a catch: Goad doesn't like racism against whites any better than he likes it when directed at anyone else. In US society that's often not exactly what people mean when they mention the word 'racism'.
There is a lot of shock value. I, like many people, am conditioned to despise racial slurs. Yet racial slurs against one group are tolerated, on the assumption that all white males are somehow in league to keep everyone else squashed. Goad's use of racially offensive terms serves his purpose: to make clear to people that 'redneck' and 'cracker' are as offensive as 'nigger' or 'greaser'.
Hopefully people will gather not only the above from Goad's book, but furthermore the notion that strife between poor 'people of colour' and poor whites is to the detriment of both and to the benefit of corporate interests that do not wish to be challenged. You want to imagine a scenario that would scare the CEOs of the USA into brown underwear mode? Imagine if poor and disadvantaged people of all colours stopped throwing bricks at one another and identified their real enemies. As Orwell said, 'if there is hope, it lies in the proles.' _Redneck Manifesto_ makes a very good case for an end to racism--against anyone--so that the wasted energy can be focused on the general good.

As a black man married to a white woman in a southern state, I found Goad's book to be interesting. For years, many people in this country have been talking about class vs. race. It is about time someone put these thoughts in the form of a book. Reading this book, you can truly feel the author's anger and rage at the raw deal that his ancestors recieved when they came to these shores.
Most white Americans (of anglo/Irish/scottish descent) have no idea that the majority of their forebears came here as transportees, also known as convicts. After all, why would Britain transport convicts to Austrailia when the Americas were so darned close?
This book is a good read for anyone that needs a historical reality check.

Jim Goad is not preaching for a white victimology, let us get it clear. What he is revealing is a social amnesia about what was actually done to the white working classes over the annals of history to coerce them into bonemeal. The enemy as Goad details is not the black neighbour but the white boss who wants to suck out the surplus labour and decorate himself in the proceeds to show off to everyone what a brill fellatio he is.

Now there is a big difference between clicking the heels and getting all steamy about white working class angst. It does not naturally flow into lebensraum and mass columns. More than anything it flows into motorcycles, heavy metal, country and western, glitter, crank, hot rods, tattoos, wife-beating and alcoholism. However Jim is not jumping on the bandwagon to castigate the feckless, but highlighting if your nose was pushed into the mire on a continual basis by the middle class effectuates, would you not need a little something to shore you up?

So whatever the white working class do, they are seen as low rent, even lower than the black neighbours who were given an honorary badge of noble savage as they contributed so much to the middle class habitus ; jazz, blues, rnb and African masks ripped off by Picasso etc. White working class by this yardstick have produced nothing of note (custom cars, bobbers, rockers etc) all do not count. Worst of all the white working class are racist and sexist, which means they have no manners or etiquette. Except go to any blue collar pub in London and see the only places where there is mixing. So Jim has thrown down the gauntlet and dug up the historical corpses to show the USA was built on white slavery with all those British kids transported to the US as slaves, tagged as convicts to fill the land quotas.

Goad makes some very good points in his diatribe against classism. Points that I've been making for decades, in fact. I grew up in the southern West Virginia coal fields, and I've been the brunt of jokes due to my heritage for years (although I'm damn proud to be a West Virginian). Goad is correct that the upper classes have always divided the poor against themselves (witness strike breakers and the hourly-wage earners who crack the WV jokes). However, his point that people have no choice in life due to the class they are born into doesn't ring true to me. I've escaped the cycle of dependency (to hourly wage labor, not welfare) through hard work--my own and my parents' (who were determined that I would never enter a coal mine). You can get out, but it's not easy. As for one reader's assertions that poor whites can easily assimilate into a higher class culture (due to the color of their skin): I may look the same, but as soon as I open my mouth to speak and someone hears my mountain accent, I'm branded a redneck. That's bigotry, pure and simple.

Goad fills in gaps in the history of the American people as it's usually taught, especially highlighting the tribulations of the lower class whites. He also takes a hard, bleary-eyed look at class and race in the U.S. today. The great thing about the book is that, in doing so, he leaves no one's chain unyanked. He sure grabbed me by the politics and gave a good squeeze! He's irreverent and irascible, but manages not to be irritating since he's so darn funny and fair. The book is a literary tag-team match featuring Noam Chomsky and Andrew Dice Clay vs. Bill Clinton and Chuck D. in which everyone ends up out of the ring with their tights down, a little bloody and bruised but with laughter as a balm if they can manage it. This is serious stuff delivered effectively with guts and good ill humor.
