This book brings together a number of existing book chapters and short papers by the author which are concerned with family and gender relations. Several of them are no longer in print elsewhere.

The issues covered here reflect the re-awakening interest in family relationships that has occurred over the last ten years in Britain. Early chapters deal with patterns of sexual conflict, the division of labour and links between gender and work, and the sexual foundations of community. Later chapters concentrate on the developing nature of family ties and above all the powerful re-emergence of three-generational conceptions or aspects of family life. There is a sequence clearly detectable through this progression in which, after a period of flux and uncertainty, family in a recognisably traditional sense has been 'rediscovered' again.
Collected togetherin this way, these essays will be of interst to all those concerned with the evolution of family relationships in Britain and in the questions of social policy that are generated by this continuing process.
