Most people who listen to this record will focus entirely on the singing, but there is a band too. They just seem have been given the accompanying role, and really only that. There are no instrumental pleasures here. This music would be so much richer, if there was more of a dialogue between the singer and the band. The recording work and/or the acoustic conditions in the concert hall are not very good either.

Five HUGE Stars! On "Redescobrir" (Rediscovering), multiple Latin Grammy-winning Brazilian diva Maria Rita delivers the performance her fans have wanted for a decade. Recorded live in São Paulo, Brazil at Creditcard Hall in 2012, she celebrates some 28 of the most famous songs of her mother, the late Elis Regina who is still generally recognized as Brazil's greatest singer, 30 years after her death. Maria Rita has carefully established her own musical identity over her career, while totally avoiding her mother's music. And now at age 35, Maria Rita shows she is uniquely-equipped and able to interpret, not just copy, these famed songs with her own familial voice using a quartet of longtime musical associates: cutting a wide swath through Elis' career from "Arrastão" that catapulted her into immediate fame in 1965 to "Águas de Março" of the "Elis & Tom" phase and beyond. The 'best of the best' includes powerful emotional versions of "Arrastão", "Essa Mujer", "Madalena", the combined "Zazueira / Citação", and "Aprendendo a Jogar" (Learning to Play). And perhaps best of all: "Redescobrir" (Rediscovering) with the audience imitating the singers from the original Elis Regina DVD; the beautiful, politically-charged samba "O Bêbado e a Equilibrista (The Drunk and the Tight Rope Walker)"; the eerie "Alô Alô Marciano" with its sarcastic "High Society" refrain sounding so much like Elis; and a powerful version of "Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus" (If I Would Speak With God) that ends with Maria Rita in tears on the DVD version. Maria Rita was 5 years old at the time of her mother's accidental death and now as an award-winning international star in her own right, she properly celebrates Elis Regina's art in these joyous, emotional performances before an appreciative audience. This recording is the missing piece that completes the family musical circle for the singer, her mother, and the fans. Bravo, Maria Rita & Elis Regina! My Highest Recommendation. (Reviewed in MP3 format: 28 tracks, all sung in Brazilian Portuguese)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bliss 26 Feb. 2013

Wow. All the other reviewers have this one spot-on! At this stage in MR's career, it's the perfect time to acknowledge her iconic mother. Daughter stands proud, replete with integrity, now in *her own* shadow.

Too many goosebump moments to list. Can't wait for the the DVD to have an international release!

Can we compile an MR wishlist? I would like MR to do an album of entirely Milton Nascimento songs. Leave your wishes in the comments... 8>)

5.0 out of 5 stars Brazilian Vocalist Maria Rita Finally Sings Her Mom's Songbook! 26 Feb. 2013

Reviewer RBSProds says it best: this is the fantastic CD/DVD that fans of Maria Rita and her mom, the legendary Elis Regina (one of NPR's Top 100 vocalists of the 20th century) have awaited! I'd add one more to the "best of the best" list: Morro Velho, the saudade-laden, lovely song by Milton Nascimento...Maria's reading of it brings me to tears. What a show!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!! 28 Jan. 2013

I enjoyed this CD from Maria much more than the "Elo" one she released in 2011. Maria puts on a great live performance dedicated to the songs of Elis Regina. A must by if you love the music of Brazil like I do.

Another great CD from her. And if you are also a fan of her mother's... this is a special treat.
