An impressive read that powerfully evokes the steam-driven Victorian world of steampunk.
When Tilda Upton returns a lost dog to his rightful owner, she accidentally alerts the authorities to her psychic powers. This sets a train of events in motion that lead her into a world of adventure, mixing with pirates, inventors, spies and hellhags.
I didnt know what to expect with this book but became enchanted by it's layers of complexity -the descriptions of the steam-powered world are sufficient to ground you, but not so overdone as to be intrusive, the characters are believable and the plot satisfying.
A very impressive book by an Independant author, which in my opinion only goes to prove that mainstream publishers are missing out - big time!

2.0 out of 5 stars sophomoric - a promising premise, but ... 21 May 2011

I wanted to like this book, really I did. The plot synopsis was intriguing, and the setting had a lot of promise. Unfortunately, with that statement, I've run out of positive comments about the book. The writing was immature, and characterization was erratic at best. An editor might have helped, for example, by preventing the repeated use of "in tact" for "intact", though I did laugh at a statement about the heroine's virtue remaining in tact! Verb tenses wandered around in time, sometimes within a single sentence. The dialog was stilted, to put it mildly. Motivations were obscure or absurd, by turns. The sex scenes were thrown in at random. There was a good story in there somewhere, but it was buried in poor writing and fuzzy plotting.

I'm totally in after a few paragraphs, cannot put it down, completely engrossed and sad when it ended. I want more of Matilda , Jack and the rest of these well thought out characters and superbly written story. Thank you you again C.J. Archer.

I've never read a "Steampunk" novel before and wasn't really sure what to expect. This new author has really caught my interest. She develops her characters - and they are certainly characters - very well.paranormal historical and romance al rolled into one. I'll be reading more of her books.

I never thought I would like a historical PARANORMAL romance, but now I find myself wanting to read more of them after this book!
