Cade is a vampire that has been operating in the service of US Presidents for generations under a blood oath. He is no friendly vampire but a deadly creature in the employ of the US, he's a great character working in an interesting context.
In the previous book, the author lost what was good about his character and went for a story that was too big and silly, here he goes back to basics. The bad guy is The Boogeyman, an immortal bad guy that re-appears in various guises to cause havoc via serial killings. The backdrop is a Presedential election, but there are clever asides about what creates the Boogeyman and elements of society that support evil.
Delighted to see the author and character back on form.
However, this book was overly formulaic to me, and lacked some of the originality that was what had initially drawn me to this series. The style of moving perspectives is predictable, and most times completely unnecessary, serving only as a constant reminder of his unique writing style. As for the characters themselves, because the author tries to fit so much in for every character, not enough depth is conveyed, even the main characters that i have followed from the beginning of the trilogy have remained two dimensional and almost superficial in their consistent characterization.
It is all exactly as ridiculous as it sounds.
In Red, White and Blood, Cade's up against his oldest foe: The Boogeyman. (Stop laughing.) The Boogeyman is something like The Saint of Killers, something like the anti-Christ and something very much like Jason from Friday the Thirteenth. He's an ancient spirit, worshipped by back-alley Satanists and corporate conspirators alike. Every generation or so, he arises - taking a mortal host and going on a killing spree.
The Boogeyman is a meta-entity straight out of a (good) Wes Craven film. Phones die around him. The weather is always stormy when he appears. Luck always runs his way. He's never dead the first time (or the second) and he'll always kill the sexually active first. There are rules he must obey, but the game's hugely broken in has favour. Fortunately, he's always stuck to low-profile targets and he's always been out-fought by Cade.
This time, The Boogeyman's picked one doozy of a target: the President himself. Cade and Zach's first impulse is to lock down the President. Keep him safe in the White House and far away from homicidal demon-gods. Except the President refuses: it is election season and he's getting hammered.Read more ›
Cade and Zach are up against their toughest opponent yet and the President himself is in grave danger. Can Our heroes stop the baddies before it's too late?
Blistering pace, action, violence and humour come together in a ludicrously fun romp that will keep you turning the pages well into the night.
It'll be very interesting to see where the excellent Chris Farnsworth takes Cade and Zach next and how they'll cope with the upheaval in their lives.
It has some cracking characters and each time he's called into action the enemy has foes to call in on their side that means that this is no easy walk in the park. Back this up with great prose, a pace that doesn't let up from the beginning and keeps you hooked to the last page and you know damn well that I'm a happy reader. Cracking.

this series of books just gets better and better and the secondary story (who's out to get who) gets more convoluted behind a good read of the main storyPublished on 25 Sept. 2013 by Mr. Geoffrey Moore
