This is a gripping tale of mystery set in Nottingham in Victorian times. The story leads John Eagles, the likeable hero, through a complex and tangled web of espionage. A very good read - I enjoyed it very much.

I really enjoyed this book, it is full of true historical facts from those far off days back in the late 1800's, the places and the trains seem so real and all around me as I made my way through this tale of the courage, intelligence and hard work put in by HM Government's secret services to help keep our country safe from the dire threat of Germany's plans to take over all of Europe and ultimately the world. Written very much in the style of Wilbur Smith I found the book hard to put down and having now finished it I am looking forwards to reading 'The Red Severns' again.

Intriguing Tale ; An unusual story, entirely convincing lots of unexpected historical connections and the descriptions of Victorian Nottingham are vivid . I hope there is a sequel as the ending suggests there might be .

This is an extremely disappointing book.

The early part of the book is based in Nottingham and being a Nottinghamian, I thought that would add another interesting dimension to the story and to my enjoyment thereof. However, the punctuation, grammar and typographical errors which litter the book are completely distracting which, coupled with the laboured narrative and gratuitous and fatuous detail which adds little to the story conspires to render the book unreadable.

I suffered for 100 pages before becoming so frustrated and irritated that I could no longer be bothered to edit the book in my head as I was reading it. Enough is enough!

Sorry, Charles!

This is a tale of Victorian Espionage and Criminality a great read. Although in the beginning the story starts at sea then it seems to mostly be set in Nottingham the story quickly takes you to Europe and Bismarks Germany. With its many twists and turns, expect the unexpected look forward to book two when it arrives?
