I bought Red Orchestra 2 (RO2) after reader favourable reviews on various websites and it didn't disappoint. There is a decent one player campaign and initial training level but like all these games it's the online play that's crucial. Firstly, the game looks great, and the attention to detail is superb, great graphics, huge maps and plenty of realism. But for me RO2's real strength is in the game play, it's verging on a combat simulation compared to other games of the genre. There's no handy crosshair to target opponents, and when you right click to use the iron sight there's no dramatic zoom in. Spend anytime out in the open, or near a window, and you're dead, don't use cover and run about trying to shoot everyone, and you're dead. This game requires much more patience and skill than most, and the learning curve is thus quite steep. But its the challenging gameplay that keeps me coming back. I was used to playing a game for a week and being on the top of the leaderboards every round, but initially in Red Orchestra I was hardly even getting a kill.
There are various classes of troops like assault, rifleman and even tank crew and you can progress through the ranks by getting kills and team points etc. There is also the usual types of game options such as territory (capture the flag type game), campaign and team death match modes et al so there's something for everyone. There is also a thriving online community with up to 64 players on the maps, and in RO2 co ordinated team play and tactics are especially important. Having a good commander and squad leaders is important and its not enough just to run around shooting away at everything that moves.
If you're a more mature and experienced gamer then I'd recommend this, its a hard game at times, but always enjoyable, and it makes the kills and victories all the sweeter when you get them.

This game is truly amazing - the developers have gone through so much effort it's unreal and are continually putting effort and care to bring attention to detail and most importantly FUN to their fans!!! Yes, it was a bit buggy on release but within a few days had the majority of these resolved and now plays like an absolute dream. If you like you're FPS that involves skill and tactics don't miss out on this game and certainly not if you're a big WWII fan like I am - it's historically accurate and gives you a real feel for what it must have been like during this immence battle and war - Tripwire have really made this a realistic experience! As mentioned this has blown me away and I will be playing this game for years to come...

While Battlefield and Call of Duty obviously dominate the First Person Shooter market, Red Orchestra 2 is a promising title still in testing. Which means its getting better all the time, and the community has grown massively in the month I've owned it.

Red Orchestra 2 focusses squarely on the Second World War, specifically the conflict on the Eastern Front between Russia and Germany. Fans of Enemy at the Gates will enjoy the immersive visuals. World War buffs will find a lot of impressive details crammed into this title - we take it for granted these days that the guns in our games will be authentic and function realistically, but not many engines provide the opportunity to grant players satisfying kills with bolt action mausers and Mosin-Nagants at ranges up to three hundred meters.

I would say that the pace of this game is a little slower than the usual suspects, but in many ways this suits the game. There is no health bar or health points - in fact, injuries are comparitively rare as opposed to outright killshots, and mean a player must drop everything to bandage the wound (leaving them vulnerable) or slowly bleed to death. Weapons lose their ammunition surprisingly quickly, meaning engagements are very short and brutal affairs if they occur at close distances, you often only have chance to get one shot off despite the relatively steady pace of the movement. It adds more value to tactical play since its impossible to run around with twin SMGs mowing things down without really paying attention.

Finding enemies can be very difficult as both sides blend in with their surroundings and in some game modes there are no icons or nametags to help you along.

first off I like this game, the single player is strange... it doesnt matter how much you die as if you do, you become one of the other soldiers fighting along side you. the only way to lose is for your whole squad to die, but you get re-enforced all the time so there isnt much chance of that. i like the little details where you can change the barrel of a machine gun if it gets too hot or use iron sights of a sniper rifle if some on is too close.

the issue i have with it is the online community clans. you die all the time so dont expect to get hundreds of kills as its not cod and is quite realistic in the sense you get shot in your gut, your gonna die. the issue is that whenever your getting a decent kill streak on a clan server and making them look like fools they kick you off thus making you lose your xp. the french clans seem to be worse for this.

its happened 8 times now which is a joke as im not a camper or cheater, i just run about and shoot anyone i see thats an enemy...

anyway, i would recommend you buy it as its great fun and i'd say find a decent non clan based server to play online with.
