I first saw the Red Hand Gang at the tender age of nine years old way back in 1977. It was brilliant when I saw it then. The episodes came and went, then it ended, after 12 episodes. Then the BBC repeated the series and I video taped every episode so that I could watch the red hand gang any time I wanted to. Then shortly after the tapes got thrown out by mistake and I was devasted. I was hoping the BBC would repeat the series again, but to no avail. The years went by and I saw no hope. Then the internet came, plus you tube and I saw clips again but it wasn't like watching it on television. I was sure it would never come out on dvd, but I typed in red hand gang and then it came up with dvd. I couldn't believe it, I felt brilliant and then I ordered it there and then. It came and I have just watched the first episode "The Kidnappers", then all my childhood memories came flooding back. At just over forty years old I am still an avid fan of the red hand gang and the plots, story lines and the kids who starred in the programme are first class. I would recommend this dvd to any one and I am giving it five stars. Just brilliant.

I can remember watching The Red Hand Gang (1977) when it first aired on UK television when I was a kid. Remember way back then? When we had a choice of three channels and, if you were lucky, mum and dad had a colour TV set. I must have been about 7 years-old when it came on and I thought it was really cool, because I lived in a small village and we already had our own gang, complete with den and treehouse. Between us we had a Chopper, Grifter, Striker, Skateboard and a pair of those old roller skates with the leather straps (!) The Red Hand Gang couldn't have come at a better time.

The TV show aired for only 12 episodes, which was a bit disappointing, but The Brendon Chase (1980) was only just around the corner. There were six members in The Red Hand Gang: Frankie (Mathew Laboteaux), Doc (James Bond III), Joanne (Jolie Newman), Lil' Bill (Johnny Brogna), J.R. (J.R. Miller), and Boomer the dog (who went on to have his own TV show Here's Boomer). Each episode they would come into contact with real criminals and have an adventure, using their detective skills to solve the crime and catch the bad guys (the first five episodes comprised of one adventure). They had a special symbol, the red hand from their own hand prints, to mark where they had been.

I never missed an episode and after we would all meet up and become The Red Hand Gang for a few hours, until we were called for dinner. Yes, we were the kids from the late 1970s-early 1980s. No internet or mobile phones, IPods or IPads, no laptops or netbooks (even the Atari 2600 or the Commodore 64 hadn't quite reached us).

All I can say is that I enjoyed watching this when I was a child and still enjoy it after watching again on DVD. Was surprised that only 12 episodes were made, it felt like there were more at the time.

Having seen the series years ago, it was pleasant to revisit the American Famous Five, as the children sort out various criminal gangs in 1970s USA. The theme is infectious, as is the incidental music. There's a few holes in th plot, eg in the fourth episode of story one, there seems no obvious reason why the children, having found the villain's hideout, can't contact the police, but that would cut the story down by one episode. Or in the same story, two of the characters state they are going to have a chat and then never do. No parents ever appear, but they must be extremely liberal when it comes to bed times. Clearly the adventures occur during the school holidays. My five year old also enjoys it and asked to see another episode (in preference to Cars). Sad to learn that one of the actors died some years ago, aged 36. Also watch out for Anthony Zerbe who appears in a similar role in Licence to Kill (1989).

I remember watching a something hand gang during school holidays, I've often sought the Black Hand Gang as I thought that was it, but it might have been this.

The stories are quite good, if more appealing to kids and maybe tense to a kid but I found it somewhat annoying at times - like someone about to find your hiding place and then suddenly someone distracts them. For kids the characters were ok.

The one downside to it all though was the constant recapping of the story so far, maybe they could have given the option to skip those. I find voiceovers annoying at the best of times, three separate stories seemed like an eternity when they probably only last an hour or so overall. From time to time it felt like a chore to get through the stories

I'd only recommend this if it's for a kid to watch, or if you watched it as a kid. Worth watching, but not something I personally would re-watch that often. It's kind of like a Goonies for TV, there are plenty of kids turned detectives shows around, funny how they ALWAYS happen to be in the right place at the right time - or wrong place depending on your perspective
