Product description
Series 1 - 8 of the smash hit comedy series created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
Synopsis:
Chicken soup machine repairman and intergalactic loser Dave Lister (Craig Charles) awakes from suspended animation to discover he is the lone survivor of a radiation leak and is now three million years into deep space and the last surviving member of the human race.
Dave is soon joined by Arnold J. Rimmer (Chris Barrie), a hologram of his dead bunk-mate, a life-form who's evolved from his pet cat and Kryten, a neurotic sanitation mechanoid. Together this unlikely bunch of heroes attempt to find their way back to Earth, under the guidance of Holly, the ship's senile computer.
Along the way they'll be brought back to reality, lose their mothership, become stranded on Starbug, bump into Lister's ex-girlfriend and find themselves back on Red Dwarf where the original crew have been resurrected by nanobots.
Includes all the BBC Comedy episodes from each of the eight series, these include: 'The End', 'Future Echoes', 'Balance Of Power', 'Waiting For God', 'Confidence And Paranoia', 'Me2', 'Kryten', 'Better Than Life', 'Thanks For the Memory', 'Stasis Leak', 'Queeg', 'Parallel Universe', 'Backwards', 'Marooned', 'Polymorph', 'Body swap', 'Time slides', 'The Last Day', 'Camille', 'D.N.A.', 'Justice', 'White Hole', 'Dimension Jump' and 'Meltdown'.

The Xtended series VII episodes are intact, as are the remastered versions of Tikka To Ride (all four versions are here), and the feature length version of Back In The Red is also included. It’s a very comprehensive package, more so if you don’t already have the multiple disc DVD sets.
On the downside, the bonus discs are exactly the same as those included in the old 2- and 3-disc DVD sets, probably so each series can potentially be sold individually down the line, but with the same new generic artwork splashed across every disc. There are some odd typos in the booklet, and the new HD disc menus are a touch lazy, but access to each episode is quick and easy.
While the Bodysnatcher disc has been put in a cardboard sleeve, making its inclusion feel somewhat an afterthought, it’s at least been upgraded to a Blu-ray disc, and (contrary to some comments online) as a result, includes every extra from the old 4-disc DVD set, meaning only the remastered episodes are missing (even the select episode commentaries are here, oddly enough, along with all the Easter Eggs).
Regarding deinterlacing issues on the series III and V discs, the BBC is now distributing corrected discs. These will eventually be in all the new sets, but if you get an affected set, email DVDSupport@bbc.com and they will help you out.
EDIT: As some others have pointed out, there is an error with deinterlacing of series 3 and episodes 4-6 of series 5. Doug Naylor says he is investigating.
Firstly I will say that this is not a HD transfer which I am sure many were hoping for. It is upscaled, colour graded and tweaked from the poorest of sources, 1 inch video tape. As a long term fan I approached this set expecting little upgrade and I am pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I think the route of the problem with the expectation comes from the BBC bigging this up as a HD product which it is not, but it is the best we will get from the sources they had to work with. It is a worthy BD product in my opinion and a welcome upgrade from the DVDs which were in places very poor.
Some episodes won't see much of an upgrade (like series 3) and others (series 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) are a clear improvement and are worth the price of the box. Lets face it, the box is cheap for 19 discs and what we get is a lot of content for the money. All the extras are here and the the trouble to add the easter eggs to the bonus Bodysnatcher disc.
There are some curious choices here, the inclusion of the commentaries from the Bodysnatcher set but without the actual episodes will serve nobody and I doubt that people will sit through a commentary talking about an episode that is not present. But the inclusion does not effect what else is on the bonus disc. The series 1 and 2 docs are included that were only included on the Bodysnatcher DVD set and fans who missed that will really value those. Like the other brilliant documentaries they are essential watching.
The extras are exhaustive, there are hours of worthwhile content which are included on DVD, they are identical to the extras discs from the original DVD releases so we are still stuck with those annoying menus. With more money they should have created new discs that matched the menus of the new BDs which are great.
Overall this is a great set, I really like the artwork, which I did not expect. It suits the show. The packaging may annoy some but I feel it is presented well and I like the disc storage. I am glad these were not stuffed in stacks.
If you come to this set expecting these 8 series to look like the modern BDs of series 10 on you will not be pleased. You need some context of what they came from and they look great in that context.
Well done Doug for doing this on what is no doubt a BBC shoe string.
However, the Biased Broadcasting Corporation is now a waste of space and serves zero lagitimate function to the British public - utter waste of money.
The Packaging and Disc holders are an absolute disgrace - predominantly thin card - almost paper and cheap plastic disc holders TAPED TOGETHER 🧐. It's beyond fragile and I'm scared I tear it just by normal handling of the box. I'm not impressed.
Put simply:-
The picture quality is awful in particular on season 3 where it is much worse than the DVD.
There are spelling errors all over the box.
Having looked side by side the DVDs are generally better.
This is a massive disappointment as I have been waiting for this Blu-ray for so long and couldn’t believe how poor the end result was.
Advice: if you already have Red Dwarf season 1 to 8 on DVD keep them and do not buy the Blu-ray.
If you don’t have them at all, buy the DVDs... not this Blu-ray set.
Whoever was responsible for letting this go on sale with such poor workmanship should be sacked.
The release is lazy and not worthy of such a great tv show.
Very sad and disappointed.
I will be returning my set as faulty given the extremely poor picture quality in season 3 (really it is very bad).
Do not buy.
