'Joe Abercrombie is doing some terrific work' George R. R. Martin, author of GAME OF THRONES.

They burned her home.

They stole her brother and sister.

But vengeance is following.

Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past and ride away smiling, but she'll have to sharpen up some bad old ways to get her family back, and she's not a woman to flinch from what needs doing. She sets off in pursuit with only a pair of oxen and her cowardly old stepfather Lamb for company. But it turns out Lamb's buried a bloody past of his own, and out in the lawless Far Country, the past never stays buried.

Their journey will take them across the barren plains to a frontier town gripped by gold fever, through feud, duel and massacre, high into the unmapped mountains to a reckoning with the Ghosts. Even worse, it will force them into alliance with Nicomo Cosca, infamous soldier of fortune, and his feckless lawyer Temple, two men no one should ever have to trust...

The past never stays buried...

Joe Ambercrombie has written a tribute to Sergio Leone dollars trilogy of Spaghetti Westerns. Red country is divided into 5 sections, the first two sections are based roughly around For a Few Dollars More, where two bounty hunters chase a wanted fugitive and his gang. Abercrombie swaps out Clint Eastwood and Van Cleef for a new character called Shy south, a young lady with a dark past, who along with her step father, a 9 fingered northerner called lamb... set out in pursuit of a gang of ruthless outlaws who burnt their farm, killed their friend and stole her brother and sister. Over the course of the first two sections Shy and Lamb join a "fellowship", a wagon train of varied people heading over the desert to the far west to make their fortune, some are there to find gold, others to stake a claim to land, to raise cattle, etc. Nothing much really happens, these two sections build up the new characters we meet, though there are a few action scenes, the token Indians, this being a western, who are called "ghosts", best of all to me was the return of Nicomo Cosca and his army of mercenaries. During the journey the character development proceeds masterfully, the philosophising about the nature and effect of the USA's settlement of the west coast was thankfully minor and the story, whilst not riveting, was still interesting and a definite page turner.

Section 3 of the book is a homage to "A fistful of dollars", where Clint Eastwood walks into a lawless border town where there's a bitter feud between two rival gangs, and is courted by both to fight for them. Joe Ambercrombies take on a fistful of dollars is at once both excellent and disappointing. Excellent in both character development, story arch and originality, I kept expecting the characters to follow the story in the fistful of dollars and was continuously surprised, pleasantly, at how Joe's take on this was at once intimately familiar and happily unfamiliar. To me this section was also disappointing, though only in the sense that it felt like it was over too quickly and wanted it to go on for longer. Probably since "A fistfull of dollars" is one of my favourite films and i would have loved to read a book based on the film set in fantasy world.

Section 4 and 5 pay tribute to the classic film, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", where three bounty hunters compete to find and keep a fortune in gold amid the violent chaos of gunfights, hangings, American Civil War battles and prison camps. These two sections are most loosely based on a film, so I can't comment much in order to avoid spoilers, though suffice to say there's plenty of violence, double dealing and treasure to satisfy anyone.

If you're like me and were initially put of by the idea of western instead of a fantasy, don't be. Whilst it is a western, there's enough action, familiar faces and fantasy elements to keep you reading, if anything this is one of Joe Ambercrombies best books. If you liked any of his other books, or like fantasy and westerns, then buy this now, you'll be happy you did.

Red Country

Joe Abercrombie isn't just the average, run of the mill Fantasy writer that finds his niche and sticks firmly and unmoving to it, gripping with white-knuckles onto his past work by resting on his laurels. No. He expands. Re-evaluates. Reconfigures. Reinvigorates. Constantly searching for different genres to merge with the one he is quickly becoming masterful at. Fantasy.

His first stand-alone novel, Best Served Cold, after his brilliant and triumphant The First Law trilogy, bore witness to the fantasy genre meeting the hard-hitting bank job story, creating a heart thumping adventure that was a fresh vision on the world. Dutifully followed up by an epic book named, The Heroes, which depicts a hard-fought, three-day battle over worthless land which is all for fruitless purposes, shows Joe's gritty examination of war, and, it is as bloody as it is brilliant.

So, finally we move onto the fresh out the printers, brand new and sparkling work that is Red Country.

Red Country combines Abercrombie's already well established world with life on the harsh, western frontier. And it is as grim and gritty as it is exciting and addictive. We run into some familiar faces (one or two that are likely to please many fans) whilst at the same time adding a healthy amount of new, interesting and realistic characters into the picture, creating a fine balance of new and old. And what a potent mix it is.

A great story, mixed with great writing makes for some wonderful (at times funny) and enjoyable reading.

Abercrombie is one of the best writers around and I'd not only recommend his incredible backlog of work, but also the new, highly polished gem that is Red Country. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

With Red Country, Joe Abercrombie continues in the style that has made him one of my favorite authors. The things that set this books above others are the grim settings, the violent tone and the dark, dry humour. There's a distinct lack of mage's, young protégé's developing into hero's and knights in shining armour, there's also very little that you would describe as classic fantasy or any other form of fantasy and for that I applaud.
There's a welcome return to many characters from previous books from the tough as nails Northmen to the ethically challenged mercenaries led by Nicomo Cosca
Alot has been mentioned about the western influences after all we have a wagon train pursued by Indians (substitute Ghosts), a depraved town in the grip of a gold rush, full of gambling, drunks and whores. A Clint Eastwood style ending where one of our protaganists rides off into the sunset, the only thing missing was the cigar but you get the idea and all this lends depth and scope to the story.
Red Country is set more than ten years after the first law trilogy in the Far Country.
Shy South and her step father Lamb return home from town to find their farm burned to the ground and the children missing.
Shy always considered Lamb, a big Northman to be a coward but he is hiding a dark and violent past that will shock even her. They track three of the bandits to a tavern in a small town. As they go to confront the attackers Lamb has some words for Shy 'Stay out of my way. You got to promise me that' an odd thing for Lamb to say but when Lamb faltered she would pick up what needed doing. Things don't turn out as Shy expects and she starts to believe Lamb is not all he seems, as they leave Shy says to Lamb 'Your name hasn't always been Lamb, has it'?
'We all got a past he replies' as he scratches the stump of his missing middle finger.
And there we have the return of the Bloody Nine, the story is not told from his viewpoint but from the people around him and we don't get the intense description that tells of his descent into the red mist. This doesn't detract the story in anyway as Shy South is a wry character with a dry sense of humour, she is forthright and doesn't hold back, and more than grabs the attention of the reader.
This is Abercrombie at his best the dialogue stands out as clever, dark as ever and witty. Both the plot and the characters are excellent, there are elements of searching for redemption as the Temple the mercenary lawyer who has run from everything in his life attempts to do something worthwhile, becoming central to the plot.
All in all a well written, well paced, bloody and brutal tale in a lawless land and I hope this is not the last we hear of the bloody nine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Um faroeste medieval
Reviewed in Brazil on 28 January 2022

Friendly: “Eu preferia a prisão.”

Lamb y Shy harán todo lo que este en sus manos para recuperarlos, en el caso de Lamb, incluso deberá aceptar la dolorosa verdad de la que ha huido por mas de 10 años.
