Desmond s captivating drawings ... depict the best and worst in what will be highly recognizable cat behavior. With it s nod to [other tales] of friendship and differences, [the story] hits all the familiar beats. But it does so with a generous dose of humor, adept storytelling and spot-on detail. --New York Times September 2012-----Jenni Desmond has obviously had ringside seats at many a catfight, her illustrations perfectly capture the absolute frenzy of a cat-scrap...The way the book ends actually made Charlotte practically jump up and down on the spot with glee. --Read it Daddy September 12--It s been a while since I fell in love at first sight, but that s precisely what happened when I saw the front cover of Red Cat, Blue Cat by debut author/illustrator Jenni Desmond. The cats gorgeously grumpy expressions, the boldness of the image as a whole, the delicate detailing of the birds in flight it made me catch my breath, nod and smile. And on turning the pages my sense of excitement and delight only grew. Red Cat, Blue Cat ...turns out not only to be beautiful but also witty, original, and jam-packed with joie de vivre; a gentle and humorous exploration of identity, envy and friendship. --Playing by the Book September 2012---Themes of jealousy and identity intertwine in this cleverly designed book… Airy background scenes with precisely detailed household objects accompany naïf illustrations of the mutually envious felines. At least one tiny mouse can be found on each spread, and debut talent Desmond's often hilarious artwork expands on her understated prose with great success…With tongue-in-cheek humor, Desmond kneads at the complex emotions underlying friendships, without overemphasizing the message about appreciating oneself. -- --Publishers Weekly October 2012----
there was plenty to amuse in this quirky book - the cats falling down the stairs, the strange items of blue food that red cat eats to try and turn blue and vice versa for blue cat. The red clothes that blue cat puts on to turn red, and red cat rolling in blue paint.....The illustrations are quite unusual in a pre-school book - the cats are not your traditional soft, fluffy, cute representations - they are splodgy and rough and more child-like in their nature which makes this book stand out from the crowd. -- --Bookaholicmum, December, 2012--- --
this book really does deserve the praise it s getting. --Rainydadmum, January, 2013
