Product description
Review
"Roy McDonough would eat Vinnie Jones for breakfast." --The Daily Telegraph
''A lower-league football legend, who was Premier League with a drink in his hand.'' --Paul Merson
''An eye-opening journey deep into the dark reaches of football's lower levels. This book is as far removed from all-seater stadiums, perfect pitches and the pasta-and-hydration culture of modern football as you could possibly get. You can feel every crunching challenge and almost taste the beer... it's not for the faint hearted!'' -- FourFourTwo
''The story of much-travelled and thoroughly incendiary former lower league player and manager Roy McDonough, Red Card Roy is a superb portrait of a fascinating character.'' -- Oliver Holt, chief sports writer Daily Mirror
''Roy McDonough didn't pull any punches when he played - and certainly doesn't now in this roller coaster of an autobiography. He tells it how it was - one great adventure, in which Roy was the Ringmaster, Comedian and Grandmaster Barman. Fantastic memories - drunken or otherwise - in which there was a very good football player having the time of his life.'' --Terry Butcher
''Roy was the George Best of the lower leagues.'' --Mick Rathbone, author of The Smell of Football
''The perfect antidote to anyone who believes football begins and ends with the Premier League. Red Card Roy is football in the raw and a brilliant read.'' --Dave Kidd, chief sports writer, The People
''A very readable book written by a player who plied his trade out of the limelight... Roy writes with brutal honesty, pulls no punches and doesn't hide away from anything that went on.'' -- John Motson
''Down where the wild things are, McDonough's reputation as football's Vlad the Impaler preceeded him.'' ----- Tony Parsons, best-selling author.
''Roy gave me my big break in football - coaching me both on the pitch and down the pub - propelling me to a Premier League career and the 2002 World Cup. He was a loveable rogue who worked hard and played hard. The type of genuine character sadly missing from the modern-day game.'' --Former Ireland captain, Mark Kinsella

This is one of the funniest, true to life biographies I have ever read. I watched Roy play, at Layer Road and it was my pleasure to meet him, when I was press officer at Harwich. I well remember his first appearance at the Royal Oak, playing as a "sweeper" for struggling Harwich. Towards the end of the game he was heard to shout, "Hurry up and blow the whistle ref, I can smell the lager from here!" A real character , if ever there was one.

Desperate for a book post xmas, I had almost forgotten the name of Roy Mcdonough but took a chance. An incredible read; how not to best use the talent you were given, how not to treat women, how not to abide by drink drive laws, how to blame everyone else for your failures.Yet, I found this story more than believable and at times was rooting for him to get his act together and achieve something but no..How would he have got on in today's football environment I have no idea but would like to have thought someone like Warnock, Allardyce etc could have straightened him out for just a little while and he could have been a success at a higher level, shame..

A great read. You do have to wonder how good this guy was and if it wasnt for the booze would he have been playing at a higher level. Woke up played football, drank 18 pints, shagged a few birds x by 15 years and you have the jist of the story. Repetitive in places but ammusing.

'Red Card Roy' takes me right back to Colchester United's non-league days in the old GM Vauxhall Conference. As a heart-felt Colchester fan, under Roy's management, you felt like the 12th man. He involved the fans and encouraged the likes of me and a few of my mates coming from nearby Clacton on Sea, to get behind the team, every week, home or away. I remember the run in with Martin O' Neill and Wycombe Wanderers. The goal scored by 'the Goalie', Scott Barrett. Going to an away game at Gateshead.. all 500 of us ! The Layer Road pitch invasion as the U's won the Conference Championship not forgetting a wonderful day out at Wembley as the U's won the non-League double.
The book itself is a story we can all relate to. Grass roots football from schoolboy to Sunday league. Being scouted if you were lucky enough. The future's looking bright.. then alcohol and the lure of young ladies kicks in. I was nodding my head as I was reading because we've all been there.
Roy's story is an emotional one. False promises and heart break.. on and off the pitch. Personal trauma. Alcohol abuse. Losing a personal fortune. Homesickness. The reality of lower league football. This story is not about Champagne and Cocaine, fast cars and Diamonds. This story is about the days of proper football. This is a story of a player who would run through brick walls for his club.
I guess Roy failed to mention that he installed a winning mentality when Player / Manager at Colchester Utd. 99% from the players wasn't enough. Its a shame that the Club directors didn't share the same ambitions as Roy, which led to his sacking. The Layer Road ground was a horrible place, but the atmosphere was electric and at times the football, overseen by Roy was breath-taking.
Well done Roy. We love you !

Where do I start this book is written from the heart by a player who played with his heart , It brings back vivid memories of watching Roy ply his trade at Rootshall, reading this book you can almost feel the crunching tackles , the sly look if satisfaction after reminding players not to take liberties. Also in those days how the drinking culture could have finished him. And the success he achieved at the other team in Essex.
But most of all I enjoyed the honesty of the book warts and all, it might not be Shakespeare but its a good old honest read , and thoroughly recommended .

Bernie Friend and Roy McDonough combine to create a true warts and all story of the life of a lower league footballer. Roy is brutal in his story telling and self criticism - and just as brutal in some of his challenges on the field of play. Bernie, who was a local sports reporter during Roy’s time in Southend, does a fantastic job of capturing the truly remarkable career of an unconventional, but fully committed journeyman.
You will never read another book like this one and I urge anyone to snap this up. You won’t put it down!

Have read many footballer biogs over the years, nothing comes close to this.
Having lived in Colchester and followed them in the good and bad years, this
Story hits home as I know all the places/haunts the big man frequented.
An incredible story and a lost talent. So far removed from the bubble current
Footballers live in. From the off this is an amazing but heartfelt story.
Not for the purists or faint hearted but a cracking read if you a a proper football fan.
