I thought it was an incredulous story, which gave a detailed insight into the lives of The Chinese during the Cultural Revolution - in particular the Author. What an incredible time she endured in the labour camp. This was a thoroughly educational book for anyone who is interested in fairly recent Chinese history. Highly recommended.

I recently read an article about Anchee and her latest book. I'm always amazed and fascinated to read about life during the cultural revolution being of similar age to Anchee.. What was happening in her life was so dreadful compared to my own, and I'm just a regular girl who grew up in UK. Her writing is wonderful, full of little snippets from Chinese proverbs. Although it is a personal account it's easy to read as she has a marvellous story to tell. A powerful and remarkable story, would thoroughly recommend this book. I'm just about to start on her sequel - The Cooked Seed.

I read Red Azalea in a weekend, in between bike rides and runs in the Andes. I could feel my heart breaking as the words swept by. I didn't want the book to end, but at the same time wanted it all to be over as soon as possible. I would love for everyone to read this book.

This is not a book I could say I loved as it is really bleak, but I found it very interesting and enlightening. I hadn't read anything prior to this about the conditions of life in communist China, other than Mao's Last Dancer.

The author relates her life as a committed communist. Her parents were well educated, but were allocated to do menial work in Shanghai while the author herself, the eldest of four children, was sent to a farming collective to work as a peasant. (Each family had to provide one person to be a peasant.)

Life was very hard as the land was swampy and poor. The workers were constantly under the view of Party officials and personal relationships were discouraged and had to be conducted in secret.

Anchee escapes this life by winning a chance of appearing in a propaganda movie sanctioned by Madame Mao. She is sent back to Shanghai to a movie studio and meets a mysterious character she knows only as "The Supervisor".

Unfortunately, before the movie (Red Azalea) can be completed, Madame Mao is out of favour and Chairman Mao is dead. The Supervisor manages to ensure she has can remain in Shanghai, albeit in a menial position at the studio.

Despite the grim outlook for her future, Anchee eventually achieves freedom by leaving China and travelling to America.

I have been unable to start reading another book as this one left me still pondering it several days after finishing it. I didn't read it for months after I first bought it, but I am glad I eventually did read it.

Having lived in Shanghai as an Expat for 5 years in the early nineties this story was of great interest. It supports & reinforces the stories told to me by some of my colleagues who were sent to the country side during the cultural revolution. The events depicted in this story did happen, entire families were destroyed simply because they were educated, imagine a society where it is illegal to read anything that was not sanctioned by the authorities!! Yet today Shanghai is an incredible city, what an amazing recovery.
