About the Author

About the author. To give his stories a realistic edge, Mike has been bitten by a snake, suffered frost bite, had his wayward yacht sink under him during a force nine gale, held a NATO TOP SECRET security classification and been serially used by a string of beautiful women. He is scared of horses and lives in a sprawling metropolis, where there are none.

Good old yarn. Very imaginative. I ended up buying all 5 books and have enjoyed them.

This is the fourth book in the author's 'Contact' series. It continues the series well, but is a bit of a dip in the books so far. In the previous books there was a balance between the action and the discovery. In this book there is little discovery and it's mostly action with some strategic discussion. The number of perspectives also seems greater creating a more fragmented feel to the story. For me it also meant that I didn't get to spend enough time with the characters.

So the book didn't quite match my expectations compared to the earlier ones, however it's far from a bad read. The author writes well, especially the action scenes. The pacing is good and I zipped through the story quickly.

A high point came in the form of a comedy of errors which provided some unexpected humour. It also marked a switch in the story from the more reflective first half into the faster paced second half.

So while I raised a number of problems in this review, but I still enjoyed reading the book and I've immediately bought the next in the series.

Absolutely *loved* this book, teared through it. Extremely witty, genuinely had me laughing out loud to myself on the tram every couple of pages. Great use of POV. We explore the characters in much more detail as Freeman shows us just how fully constructed this world is. More cool technology revealed, new threads to the story... really feels like a new reality. Don't want to put any spoilers in so will just leave you with a WOW, dat ending.

This was a really good book, and didn't really slow down much even though it's the fourth book. You got to see a lot more from the other key characters in the unfolding drama and it was interesting to see it from the others point of view. It still has the entertainment factor as well as the fact that I just couldn't leave it alone.
