I love this book. For a start I've actually made food from it, unlike some other recipe books which I take off my shelf every now and then to stare at the pictures. Having said that, the food photos in this are delicious looking too. I've taken a peek at Holly Bell's blog since buying it and apparently, the pictures have been taken by the same guy who does Jamie Oliver's books. I guess he knows his stuff.
As Holly was a Great British Bake-Off finalist I expected another baking spin-off book but, after seeing a Telegraph recommendation I was curious enough to give it a go. I'm really pleased that I did, it's just what I needed. Everyday family food that me and my other half can cook, even when we're feeling frazzled. The recipes are simple, easy on the budget and inspiring in little ways (lasagne with sausage and butternut squash, masala lamb chops, cauliflower macaroni cheese, rocky road florentines all went down a treat, clean plates all round). It's written with real heart and humour. Clearly some cherished memories of people and the food that they've inspired (which in turn makes you think of your own). And refreshingly, there's none of the judgment or smugness of 'mum' books. Each chapter gives ideas on the meal moments of life (see below). It's a good buy and a real help. Definitely worth it.

I am a normal Mum, which is why it’s taken me so long from purchasing this book to posting a review, I’ve been busy being a Mum, and doing mum stuff. Oh and A LOT of cooking thanks to this book.
In fact I’m so normal I think a fancy meal is salmon paste stirred into pasta rather than the grated cheese we have on normal days! (thanks goodness nursery provides three square meals for my little one, I have asked them if they can save me portions!) Despite having a challenging full time job and a toddler, I love to cook when I can, but find ‘regular’ recipes off putting, I wanted to make coconut macaroons recently for my boyfriend who loves them (from a packet) but the recipe I found online called for ‘Shredded coconut, and on no account must you use desiccated!’. Where on earth does one find shredded coconut???? And if I did find it, when would I use it again???? Another expensive specialist ingredient to sit in the cupboard and go out of date!
I want recipes that use everyday ingredients and equipment that I have, and don’t require sitting and waiting for internet only purchases to arrive then get forgotten about as I’ve run out of time for baking. And boy have I found them, in Holly Bells book (thank you, at last a book!) its all very well being able to access all manner of recipes from anyone on the internet via my phone but a-I don’t want to spill ingredients or get my mucky fingers all over it and b-quite often the reason I have a few minutes to enjoy time in the kitchen is because the aforementioned toddler is using my expensive phone to play a game (which honestly is educational!

This has to be one of the best family cookery books out there - and there are a lot! The recipes are faster and tastier than expected and I've tried more of the recipes in this book than from many of the celeb cookbooks which seem to overcomplicate family meals.

The pimms cheesecake was a hit at a family get together, the st clements breakfast rolls were delicious and even my husband (who normally hates pasta) and my 7 & 8 year olds have been converted by the 'creamily quick crab linguine', which took about 15 minutes start to finish (take note Jamie, no mega list of ingredients & an hour of prep beforehand!!).

Everything we've tried so far has turned out well which means I'll be trying more of the recipes in this book and getting the children involved with lots of the suggestions. Thanks Holly - you clearly understand what it means to be a normal mum who's looking for fresh meal ideas with all the pizzazz and less of the fuss.

I am a brand new mum (6 weeks in) with maternity leave ahead of me, and I decided to treat myself to a little something useful as I'm not the greatest cook. I saw the author on Loose Women and thought I would give this a go. I couldnt have picked a better present to myself, and my partner and eventually my child when he starts to eat! I've already tested out a couple of recipes which have gone down a treat. The photography is really something special, lots of accessible recipes that look easy and tasty and the short anecdotes throughout make it a nice, personal read. I would highly recommend this.
