The Wolfe Tones are the most supressed band in England. Ask even specialist record shops and the chances are they have not heard of them. I dont know if they are officially banned or just quietly supressed. When most banned albums or songs shoot straight to number one you can see why the goverment wouldnt want to bring attention to this group.I only heard them through a bootleg tape some years ago from Liverpool.
This album has been on my CD for 6 weeks now. It has got to be the best collection of their work.It is full of humour and passion great lyrics sang with real conviction I have never been a fan of Irish music but if I had known that such a vast range of rebel songs existed I would have snapped them up. It is a sign of continuing prejudice and ignorance that such a treasure trove of work could be lost if it were not for the Wolfe Tones and other bands. They cover the old songs but continue the spirit with their own songs about the current struggles (Joe McDonnell /In Belfast)I feel, as an Irish born English bred person, that I have been given a new version of the Irish Problem this time from the inside of Ireland instead of the studios of the BBC.I was born in Kildare where Wolfe Tone is buried , something I never knew until I heard this album.
A fantastic collection of songs a tour de force of rebellion and heroism.

I bought the Wolfe Tones albums 'Irish to the Core', 'Up the Irish', and 'Rifles of the IRA' in the 70's as a teenager in New York. I loved them - great songs, brilliantly sung with pathos, humour; whatever was required to bring out the best in the song,- they did it. So, 30 years on I treated myself to this album - what a shock! It seemed to me strident, overproduced and not a patch on those three old albums. So, if you know and love the Wolfe Tones as they are in this album; buy it. If not, and you want to hear them living up to their name as premier Irish Rebel band, then save your pennies up and get the old albums. It must, however, be said that Brian Warfield's essay on the history of Irish music in the insert to Rebels and Heroes, almost makes it worth buying - it is very good.
Maybe the Wolfe Tones could take a leaf out of Eric Clapton's book and do an 'unplugged' version, for their 50th anniversary, and perhaps Brian could expand on his essay and write a book on the subject - I would certainly buy it.
