As a boy growing up in rural Arkansas, Bob Brewer often heard from his uncle and his great-uncle about a particular tree in the woods, the "Bible Tree" filled with strange carvings. Years later he would learn that this tree was carved with symbols associated with the Knights of the Golden Circle, a Civil War era secret society that had buried gold coins and other treasure in various remote locations across the South and Southwest in hopes of someday funding a second War Between the States. These secret caches were guarded by sentinels, men whose responsibility it was to watch and protect these sites. To his astonishment, Bob discovered that both his uncle and his great-uncle had been twentieth-century sentinels, and that he had grown up near an important KGC treasure site. In Shadow of the Sentinel, Bob Brewer and investigative journalist Warren Getler tell the fascinating story of the Knights of the Golden Circle and the hidden caches the KGC established across the country. Brewer reveals how, with agonizing effort, he eventually deciphered the fiendishly complicated KGC codes and ciphers, which drew heavily on images associated with Freemasonry. (Many of the key KGC post-Civil War leaders were Scottish Rite Masons, who used the cover of that secret fraternity to conduct their activities) Using his knowledge of KGC symbolism to crack coded maps, Brewer has located several KGC caches and has recovered gold coins, guns, and other treasure from some of them. Shadow of the Sentinel is the most comprehensive account yet of the activities of the KGC after the Civil War and, indeed, into the 1900s. Getler and Brewer suggest that the clandestine network of KGC operatives was far wider than previously thought, and that it included Jesse James, the former Confederate guerrilla whose stage and bank robberies helped to fill KGC treasure chests. This is a rousing and provocative adventure that weaves together one man's

Review

Dan Burstein, editor of the national bestseller Secrets of the Code: The Unauthorized Guide to the Mysteries Behind The Da Vinci Code Rebel Gold is a great adventure story and a fascinating treasure-hunt tale, but it is much more than that. It is an improbable, fantastic, and yet ultimately eye-opening trek through unknown, unseen, and unremembered episodes of American history. Jesse James, Confederate gold, the Knights of the Golden Circle, Freemasons, Albert Pike, the Ku Klux Klan, mysterious maps, codes, and symbols, echoes of the Knights Templar: It would make a great case for Dan Brown's Robert Langdon character -- except Warren Getler and Bob Brewer got there first -- and in non-fiction!

About the Author

Warren Getler is an investigative journalist based in Washington, D.C. Previously he has been a New York-based financial reporter for The Wall Street Journal and a London and Frankfurt correspondent of the International Herald Tribune.

If you watch Civil War Gold on TV, this book is for you. I never really thought about the Confederate Treasury before but there is more than a few stories to be told about what happened to the gold coins and bullion.

I purchased this book on my new Kindle, because my paperback copy of this book is suffering from yellowing, due to acids in the paper. This excellent book is one that I have read and re-read several times. The hunt is even going on in Canada, because Jesse James had relatives here, and families do have stories to tell ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and intriguing but unsatisfying
Reviewed in the United States on 3 November 2025
The work is a well written and intriguing collection of theories regarding the Confederate States of America and the semi-secret Knights of the Golden Circle which may have played a part in that nation's founding. The book rapidly moves from a search for the lost gold of the Conceded act to being a conspiracy theory of the Knights of the Golden Circle and their possible connections to Freemasonic groups and even the Rosicrucians and the Knights Templar. The result is an interesting look into the many possible pieces of a grand puzzle connecting them all. I found it strangely fascinating but yet unsatisfying because, in the end, it asks more questions than it can actually answer. Like many conspiracy theory works, it left me wondering if it could really be so, while also asking myself if I can actually buy the idea as a reality. If you like such puzzles and such ponderings, this is definitely the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a cross between History and a Mystery.

I love finding out the hidden history of America. I hate what is going on in our country now where they keep rewriting history to be politically correct. I want history to be history not fiction.

This book is packed with information from tons of research. It's very dense reading with so much information printed in rather small print with tight leading. I can't see as well as I used to so I get tired of reading this book in a short time and have to rest my eyes.

I find the subject interesting and compelling. The writing is clear. If you are interested in the Civil War or the history of the South, you will enjoy this book.
