A fairly standard 'boy finds magic & old life dies, reluctant to embrace new life but comes through in the end' tale. No real surprises, good writing style, a variety of characters & a small element of mystery at the end to lead into the sequels.

Not bad then, but for me I felt it still lacked something, not entirely sure it was worth the money either.

A great book I read in one sitting - the magic system is good, the characters are engaging and the story is believable (no annoying dreams/prophesies here). The biggest disappointment was reaching 90% and realising that the last 10% was the glossary! Very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

Good starter for a series. The difficulties of leaving home and dealing with new surroundings is explored quite well. A little bit too fast at the last third of the book and the story could have been developed more from this point. Look forward though to reading the next book.
