the reader scriptural reasoning tools to use in conversations
with JW's, with the ultimate purpose being to bring these folks
to an accurate knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ! I highly
recommend it for anyone who has a friend or relative in the
Jehovah's Witnesses. I really love the way Ron Rhodes uses the
Watchtower's own material to disprove it's own position on
various teachings. This is A "must" for anyone who has been
touched by the famous "door to door" church! It's fun, as well
as informative, because Rhodes lets you prepare for your next
visit carefully. You will be informed, not frustrated, when you
converse with the Witnesses. Enjoy!
When dealing with the three texts used by Jehovah's Witnesses to justify themselves in spite of having made prophecies that were then not fulfilled, the author addresses the texts one at a time, presenting after each text the reasons why the JW interpretation is wrong. On quite valid grounds, the reasons are the same in each case, which results in the author saying the same things three times. This section would have been much more effective - and shorter! - if he had presented all three texts first, and had then given his explanation once.
Rhodes quotes extensively from Jehovah's Witnesses publications, and this is a strong point of the book. He also quotes constantly from David A Reed's two books, "Answering Jehovah's Witnesses Subject by Subject" and "Jehovah's Witnesses Answered Verse by Verse." These are considerably shorter than Rhodes' book, and some readers may prefer to get them in the first instance. He also quotes very frequently from some of Robert M Bowman, Jr's books, in particular "Jehovah's Witnesses, Jesus Christ, and the Gospel of John" and "Why You Should Believe in the Trinity", both of which are recommended, although the book on John's gospel goes into the Greek text and aspects of Greek grammar in considerable detail, which may be more than some readers will require.
"Reasoning from the Scriptures" has a very comprehensive bibliography, which will provide pointers for further research. It also stresses accepting that Jehovah's Witnesses are sincere, and approaching them with respect, which are very important points, and it suggests throughout questions that will help the reader, whether Jehovah's Witness or not, to consider with care the real meaning of the Biblical passages that are quoted from.
If you expect to buy several books on the Jehovah's Witnesses, in my opinion Rhodes' "Reasoning from the Scriptures" definitely should be one of them. Recommended for Jehovah's Witnesses and non Jehovah's Witnesses alike.
The one-star reviews appear to have been written by Jehovah's Witnesses opposed to what Dr Rhodes has written, and they definitely do not give a fair representation of the content and value of this major book, which makes a significant contribution to an understanding of the issues covered.
