What then follows is a fast and furious crime thriller which keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. There is much to take in, not just with what's going on in Nick and Mel's now extremely unsettled life, but also with the local crime team who, led by shady police officer Nathan Ballack, have a whole heap of problems of their own to solve.
Overall, it's an interesting observational piece about the moral dilemma that faces anyone who may come face to face with an intruder in their home, and what constitutes 'reasonable force'. I thought that the plot at heart of the novel worked well. The story is punchy and robust, with well imagined characters, who, whilst not always likeable, add a scary amount of realism to this gritty and uncompromising crime thriller. I could quite easily see this being made into a crime drama. It has more than enough twists and turns and there are some really interesting scenarios, which, with the right sort of script, would play out really well on TV.
I really enjoyed this book. Although the writing was a little naive, it was exciting and compelling and I raced through it. Ironically, I started this book immediately after finishing a book by a well known author whose writing skills are excellent. Yet even within the first chapter of Reasonable Force it was clear that the story telling was far, far superior to that of the well known author’s. Also the characters were so well drawn I could picture them perfectly and their dilemmas held me captive, emotionally.
There were a few overlong passages telling how terrible a character feels, which need editing and tightening up, but they did not detract at all from a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable read. I would definitely look out for anything more from this author.
I recommend Reasonable Force for crime fiction enthusiasts and book clubs, for the novel draws the reader in very quickly and the subsequent exciting unfolding of the story with the unravelling of lives would lead to very lively discussions!
With the crime genre now so popular, Reasonable Force would make an exciting film or TV series – there are many twists and turns to the plot and the author keeps the reader guessing as the tension mounts. I look forward to C.T. Sullivan’s next book.
