5 + stars. Reviewed by Gemma on behalf of Your Next Hot Read

So I finished this book a few days ago but I’m still not sure where to begin with my review. No matter what I write I will not do this book justice but I will try. This is the second book of Prescott’s I’ve read and yet again she has done it – reduced me to tears (in a good way I promise) and made me take this book to heart. She has become a new one-click author for me and I will not hesitate to buy her other books.

Annalyse is a free-lance writer and has travelled all over the world. She has finally decided that it’s time to stop running and live with the burn that consumes her every day. She goes home to housesit for her sister, Meg, and ends up saving her sexy as hell next door neighbour, Holt, in more ways than one.

Holt is a doctor and resident bachelor on the lake. He has his own demons to face in the fire but he is not ready to do that. He is happy living in his own environment where he can control everything and everyone around him. That is until he meets Annalyse. Is she real? Is she a dream? Only time will tell.

Annalyse and Holt are both broken people, scarred by incidents that occurred on Halloween 5 years ago. They vow not to fix each other, to simply provide pleasure, but can this truly make them happy? And can two broken people really agree to not try to fix each other?

I don’t want to go into too much detail about Holt and Annalyse as I don’t want to ruin the rollercoaster of a journey that their relationship takes. Annalyse is one tough cookie. She owns her flames in the fire and despite a horrific past, has learned to love the warmth that the fire gives. How she carries on I have no idea as I don’t think I could in her shoes.

5 Amazing, No small talk stars.

The reason for me is such an amazing and emotional journey for both characters Holt and Annalyse.

Told in dual pov's I was taken on the journey of loss, understanding, the unraveling of heartache and the need to be open, no small talk.

Annalyse is house sitting for her sister and comes across Holt on Halloween night a date significant to both characters for loss and the place were nightmares were born and are still kept alive for both of them until they learn to let go.

A journey of healing and the rebuilding of trust and hope with heartwarming moments but also happy and humorous times.

Brilliant characters, Annalyse is a woman with backbone who doesn’t mince words and Holt's words at times melt you.

Prescott Lane had me completely captivated with Holt and Annalyse's story, so brilliantly written well balanced with everything in all the right places, humor, sadness the depth and intimate moments I was completely enraptured from start to finish, I loved it and absorbed every part of the story.

There are so many beautiful thoughtful words throughout The reason for me. A highly recommended heartwarming read.

"Promises made in tears are the strongest"

A deeply emotional read about two people who have felt pain and in some respects, continue to do so…until each other.
Annalyse was the most amazing characters, she had been through so much, pain and heartache that for me was almost beyond my comprehension. I had my hopes high that she would find her happy place as the book progressed but she reached her breaking point eventually and after years traversing the globe she was ready to go home.
Heading home to spend time with her sister, she was apprehensive I think of putting down the slightest semblance of roots in one place have having been so nomadic almost for so long but when her sister and her partner take off for a while, Annalyse take over at the helm, housesitting.
Just before her sister leaves she takes Annalyse to a neighbourhood party that is being held for Halloween, there was a hesitancy at first but she soon found her stride and was entranced…not only in the fireworks but also in the handsome man that has caught her eye.
Oh, Holt, my heart broke for this damaged man, who was living with a pain that he seemed determined to keep closely guarded, he has suffered in the most awful way but was internally adamant that he could carry his nightmare squarely on his own shoulders but could Annalyse break through that tough exterior?
I was delighted that with Annalyse, Holt was almost self-healing because by helping her he was inadvertently helping himself, his desire to ease her pain was just the start of a friendship that was only ever destined to end in one way. The time they spent together, the bonding that these two broken souls was a relationship that neither of them were looking for.

The Reason for Me by Prescott Lane
4 stars!!!

“It’s the scars you can’t see that are the hardest to heal.”

The Reason for Me is a story about second chances whereby two people completely broken, cried off from love in all forms, meet and maybe find what neither one was looking for…each other. Both Holt and Annalyse were wary, hesitant and reticent when it came to members of the opposite sex, both burned in completely different ways, yet the damage was done. The same night, five years ago, destroyed both of them. Two completely separate instances, two completely different places, two completely different people, yet the damage was the same.

“…I have learned to love the fire, to crave the burn, to become the Phoenix instead of an arsonist who wants to burn the whole motherf***er down.”

Holt is a man, but he is a shell, an empty vessel. He goes from A to B but doesn’t take in his surroundings, he knows the routes and the routines, but that is all they are. His heart beats, but as a means to exist, the rhythm, the love…died and it is beyond resurrection. Holt is an OBGYN, he throws himself into work, works all the hour’s god sends and is always on call, he never takes a break, but work is his way of forgetting the past, relinquishing his thoughts, his grief and guilt, even if for a few hours and even if said guilt is totally misguided. This is a man that has been closed off for five years, a man that hasn’t even looked the other way at a woman, a man that has self-imposed loneliness and emptiness on himself, a man with no plans for a life outside of his work and his twin brothers. The sad thing…Holt had a lot to give.

“I’ve lost a lot of people close to me. I couldn’t survive losing someone else.
