Fire and brimstone gothic chiller set in the US bible belt. Professional sceptic of unexplained phenomena, Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank), is called in to investigate when a series of biblical plagues beset a small southern town. Thinking at first that she'll easily find human evidence in the occurrences, she soon comes to realise that there are some things that can't be explained away.
Katherine Winter specialises in disproving miracles around the world, and is convinced that science has an answer for anything. When shes asked to investigate a series of strange events in a small USA town she begins to suspect that there might be something beyond science causing the events.

This starts out being scientific but soon gets creepy becoming basically a modern take on the biblical plagues, but given a supernatural twist. If you can accept the pseudo religious prophesising and enter into the story, then there is actually very little to fault in this. The photography, sets, sound and acting are all very good and there are some awesome special effect to boot.
The single disc opens to a 4 screen 53 language choice [ UK being no 52!] before playing 2 trailers/ads then offers play, scene selection, special features [science of 10 plagues, characters, a place called haven, the reaping;the seventh plague] and languages [English Italian, English narration, subtitles 5 languages including English and Italian]. Rated 15 this has 1 use of the ‘F’ word but the few remaining ones are mild. Nudity is indistinct and fleeting but most of the film has intense scenes, many being of a frightening nature. For late evening or night-time viewing this is a recommended view, provided you can handle the subject matter.
It has a good story and some good acting talent on show, the effects especially for the plaques are very well done. It does start a little slow but it soon builds up to a great ending with a few twists along the way. Perfect for an evenings entertainment. Overall score 7/10.
Not really recommended for watching before bed ;)
But she runs out of plausible explanations when what appears to be the Bible's Ten Plagues begin to afflict a small town and she is called there to help its citizens. They blame a young girl, Loren McConnell (played frighteningly well by AnnaSophia Robb), whom they accuse of having killed her brother in a river that has now turned into blood, the first plague. Katherine encounters her several times and has trouble getting into an objective frame of mind as she likens Loren, no matter how creepy looking she is, to her own daughter.
During the time I was watching this I notice that some of the plagues could have used a scarier execution. Like, when the frogs fell out of the sky, they were only a few, and oddly, none fell on the characters, just around them. That would have been a perfect eww-gross opportunity. Also, with the frequent references to the eerie wind chimes that everyone in the town seemed to have, I kept expecting to see some connection in the end but it was unsatisfying a mere misdirection. Hilary Swank is a phenomenal actress, there is no question, and she deserves far greater than her role as Katherine Winter gives her to work with.Read more ›
A shame because the acting is good. The effects are good. The intentions were good. In different hands..... ?

Well, the plot is OK and is more or less what you'd expect from a movie like that. But the copy (if one can use this term for a digitally streamed piece of content) is AWFUL. Read morePublished 2 months ago by Vladimir Bogdanov
