Product description

Review

Dr Pickering is an experienced and lucid author and his text closely correlates with the demands of the 11+ Common Entrance Science syllabus. He has included a focus on experimental design which will help lay the foundations for children to develop the practical and investigative skills required throughout secondary science education. --Dr David Penter, Malvern College

Galore Park, the publisher of the excellent So You Really Want to Learn Latin, have come up with So You Really Want to Learn Science. Book 1, clearly laid out and attractively illustrated, covers life and living processes, materials and their properties and physical processes in 25 lucid chapters, each of which ends with a series of exercises. Aimed at pupils working for the 11-plus Common Entrance exam, it has been endorsed by the Independent Schools Examinations Board and will be followed by Book 2, completing the 13-plus syllabus. For parents who cannot afford prep school fees, this is the next best thing. --John Clare, The Daily Telegraph

Book Description

I bought this for my son's home education and am very pleased with it indeed. I will go on to buy the other books in the series and will be buying some of the other Galore Park books too.
This book is well laid out, well illustrated and has clear concise and well explained text. My son really loves this book and looks forward to his science lesson every day.

It is more academic in tone compared to the CGP books although my daughter found the book an interesting read. Problem is it doesn't always explain things very well so she doesn't always fully understand what it says. Questions for each topic often ask things which are not mentioned in the teaching text preceding, and can be pretty tricky, so she often gets answers wrong and this knocks her confidence a bit. I thought it could be the case that she is just naturally not that good at Science. However she did the SATS and is found to be working at Level 5 standard in both English and Maths aged 12, so I thought maybe we should try another resource - maybe she'd do better in that. We have since found an alternative Science resource for KS3 that is much better at explaining concepts for her than the Galore Park Science books, guides her progressively through each concept without throwing her in the deep end, and she is learning a lot more from that and doing pretty well, so my verdict now is that the Galore Park So You Want To Learn Science series simply just wasn't a good fit for her and in my eyes, was a bit lacking. I am also using the Junior Science series of Galore Park for my younger daughter. That one seems better but I'm still not entirely happy with it and am looking at something else for her later.

I used this book and followed on to book 2, just to stretch my daughter some time back!
She found it interesting and challenging, but not daunting. It goes into detail and links science to the real world.
She was placed on a level 6 in Science and achieved the second highest mark in her class.
Interestingly, she even used Book 2 in senior school to recap basics to understand more advanced concepts.
I agree that the questions can be open to interpretation/tricky/ and could knock confidence so I used them with the answer book available, rather than testing.
My son used these too and enjoyed them.
