What's not to love about Fun Boy Three? Those of us of a certain age will be dragged back to our heydays with this. I play it in the car when I'm driving alone to work, where I can offend nobody with my enthusiastic singing along.

It cdertainly takes me back a few years (okay, decades! don't go on about it!) . It didn't have one or two of the songs I remembered from my original album; and it's so long ago I can neither remember what the album was called or what the songs were. But, it did have several. It is a treat hearing them all again.

This is called the best of Fun Boy Three and of course it contains all their best songs (I only missed "Alone"). But please notice that both of their greatest hits "Summertime" and "Our lips are sealed" here only appears in special maxi versions, not in the single versions. This is very sadly because those single versions neither appeared on there regular albums. So if you want the greatest songs of Fun Boy Three in their original single versions you should look for "The best of Fun Boy Three" issued by Chrysalis.

When the specials disbanded like many i was lost. I bought a couple of singles by the Fun Boy Three - The lunatics have taken over the asylum and T'ain't what you do it's the way that you do it(B&Q advert), but it stopped there. However it simply wasn't ska or the specials. The fun boy three were a more mature sound with a wide array of musical instruments accompanying their songs. 20 years later i rediscovered what i missed out on the first time round. Each song is brilliantly produced with fantastic lyrics in a similar style to the specials, although the band claims "that none of us can play that well". Who wants boring songs from talented musicians when you can have catchy tunes with lyrics you can relate to! If you like terry hall, then check this out - he is a musical genius, judging by the success of their recent tour, maybe the fun boy three should reform!

I personally rate FB3's second album "Waiting" as the superior of the two. So the fact that this compilation contains every song from that album other than the opening short instrumental "Murder She Wrote", means you have a winner.

Add to that 5 of the 11 songs from the first album (and in my humble opinion these are the 5 songs that really matter from that lesser album; though "Way On Down" would have been welcome), PLUS 4 other FB3/Bananarama collaborations - including the 80s favourite "Really Saying Something" - and this is really the only FB3 CD you'll ever need.

Deadpan Terry Hall with cutting lyrics and excellent tunes.
Slightly different from the Specials but featuring three of their main men.
The more that i see the less i believe about Northern Ireland and the troubles. Great song and the farmyard connection. of course they wouldn't play these songs on the radio as not commercial. A great value buy and a jewel in my cd collection.

the version of "our lips are sealed" is a different mix to the chart hit and sounds nothing like it

When Ska bounced on to the music scene in the dying ashes of the Punk fire, the Specials stood out as a mixed race band from a mixed race midlands town (Coventry), which would later morph into he offshoot the Fun Boy Three.

This compilation covers some of the Specials and Fun Boy Three tracks and also involves Bananarama, the 3 girl backing group that would find dame in their own right.

The Ska tunes of the Specials era are varied in their style which is refreshing and unlike some of the then Ska type bands that would slavishly re-record 1960's Ska hits, the Specials put their own mark on the genre with well thought out and arranged songs, Ghost town and Too much too young for instance.

With the breakaway of Terry Hall, Lynvale Goldingand Neville Staple to form the Fun Boy Three, the group brought in an all girl backing group, with June Miles Kingston on drums, their first hit Tunnel OF Love is a brilliant song, which a version can be seen on the Tube DVD (also on Amazon).

Great nostaligia and contains some less well known versions of their songs
