Gloria Grayson knows what it is like to be the most sought after celebrity but in the past two years, her life has changed dramatically. Out of work, divorced from her drunken ex, and eating everything that she can get her hands on, her only comfort is the love she gets from her spoiled dog, Baby-Girl. But Gloria is adamant that soon the reality-tv obsessed world will see sense and she will be returned to her pedestal complete with adoring fans. But when she is papped in her sloppy dressing gown and her fuller figure is laid bare to the critics of the world, Gloria is forced to really look at what has happened to her life.
When her agent secures her a paying gig on the hit reality tv show, Reality Rehab, Gloria knows that she can kill two birds with one stone - gain some much-needed money and exposure, and lose some of that excess skin that doesn't want to shift itself. But entering the Reality Rehab house for eight weeks will change so much more for Gloria and her fellow celebrity housemates who are all battling their own addictions. And when a surprise guest makes an appearance, the world will be glued to their screens to watch the crazy action unfold...
Firstly I am proud to say that I am a reality tv show addict - from Teen Mom and Made in Chelsea to the Real Housewives franchise and everything in between, I love nothing more than to watch peoples real lives unfold before me (and yes, I do know that a lot of it is staged etc but we won't quibble over it!). So when I came across this story I knew that it was right up my alley - reality tv in book form, Heaven!! - and boy was I right.
Perfectly paced with so many laugh out loud moments, engaging and addictive characters, and a deeper underlying story of love, loss, and heartbreak, REALITY REHAB by Lisa Mary London was the perfect escape for me, and I really enjoyed the layout of the story with the odd online article appearing here and there with the typical Twitter responses listed underneath - comedy gold!
From Doggie Yoga (Doga, and yes it is really a thing) to seances, from betrayals to new beginnings, this novel really does have it all, with that extra special something that really gives it the X factor (yes, I went there LOL). So whether you love reality tv or hate it, this novel has something for you. So what are you waiting for? Go and buy REALITY REHAB by Lisa Mary London now.
*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the author
Gloria is brilliant she is funny and completely over the top after a lifetime of being adored it is just so difficult for her to accept reality. Her one liners were perfect and I especially loved the line where after seeing a less than flattering picture in a newspaper she said she was so incensed she ate an entire Black Forest Gateau! She was constantly making me smile and I couldn't help but root for her even with her flaws.
The whole story is a delight to read with so many laugh out loud moments especially any scene with Tommy. He is pretty hysterical at times and just like Gloria has some fabulous one liners put it this way I didn't dare drink or eat whilst reading as I would have surely ended up wearing it! Reading this story just felt like getting a behind the scenes experience, warts and all! Lisa Mary London has written characters who just seemed to come to life before my very eyes, they are wonderfully over the top and so very entertaining. A special mention has to go to Baby-Girl who is brilliant and I loved her attitude to Tommy.
With newspaper articles mixed in with the story which I thought was a fun touch especially the readers comments. If you want a laugh out loud, snort inducing read then Reality Rehab is a must. The story moves pretty quickly and it's so easy to get dragged into the celebrity lifestyle of perfection and determination to succeed.
If Reality Rehab was a TV show I'm pretty sure I would be hooked!
With thanks to Emma for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
When faded TV star Gloria decides to resurrect her career by taking up a place in reality TV programme 'Reality Rehab', she is ill-prepared for the starvation diet for both herself and her obese dog. But she is even less prepared for a houseful of misfits, including a medium, a boob-jobbed reality star, a disgraced MP, a kleptomaniac style guru, a toy boy, and, worst of all, her ex husband...
Witty, fun, and pacy, this is an uplifting read. There's a lot of tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the reality TV, and the characters are all larger than life (as characters on these shows inevitably have to be). But there's also a humanising element to the characterisation which, given how arrogant and self-centred every single character in this novel is, is quite an achievement. I actually found myself caring for some of the characters. One for those seeking something light and uplifting. Recommended!
