The Second of three tracks worked on by 'The Threetles' as the lead single for the soon to be released Anthology 2, "Real Love" finds Paul, George and Ringo again taking a John Lennon cassette demo and making something of it. Yes, John's vocals sound thin due to the original source, but the rest make something of it, fleshing out the demo to become a Beatles track.

Track 2 is live, with a song left off The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl, "Baby's In Black". This is the first appearance of any track from that concert on CD officially, despite a needle drop bootleg of the album being available, with the three track tape still packing a punch, especially evoking the screams of Beatlemania.

A brand new mix of "Yellow Submarine" starts with a previously excised introduction, emphasizing the submarine sound effects throughout. It's a real highlight of this disc.

Finally, a hybrid mix of "Here, There And Everywhere" strips things back to Paul's guide vocal before the gorgeous harmonies are added towards the end.

Three of the tracks here are unique to this release and complement Anthology 2 well. For me "Yellow Submarine" is the standout track, but nothing here is superfluous for those wanting to fill a gap in their collection - though the current price may make you want to look around a little first.

"Real Love" was the second 'new' song released by the Beatles as part of their 1990's 'Anthology' project. As with 'Free as a Bird', this was a song originally written and recorded by Lennon during his period of retirement (1976-79). He wrote 'Real Love' and recorded several demos of it in 1979. Of these recordings, one version of the song was subsequently released in the 1980's. For this Beatles single, a different version of the song was selected. It was then cleaned-up (with background noise subtracted), and the remaining members of the band - McCartney, Harrison and Starr - added slightly revised lyrics, and lots of new instrumentation. Also, the tempo of the song was altered - making it feel more like a Beatles song (rather than a Lennon solo recording). As well as being released as a single, this track was also issued on the second 'Anthology' album.

The track by Lennon is virtually complete - although it's recorded on a home tape machine, and sounds rather primitive. Had he recorded it in the studio, it would be considered a finished piece. It's a love song, and as a fan of Lennon I find it a beautiful recording. The Beatles version is very good - and it offers a slightly more polished product as compared to 'Free as a Bird'. However, I am left questioning why this song was issued under the logo of 'The Beatles' - as it's really a Lennon solo composition. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoy it. What is offered by the Beatles is a faster version with more beat, almost reminiscent of 'Strawberry Fields'.

This single also features versions of 'Baby's In Black', 'Yellow Submarine' and 'Here There And Everywhere'. Had it been issued in the 1960's, this would have been an EP!

While I tend to prefer 'Free as a Bird', this second new single is still fantastic. Even so, I think that Lennon's somewhat unfinished version of 'Real Love' is at the very least on par with that of the Beatles version.

This is a great song and the b-sides are great too!
But I would not recommend buying this unless you really like the song or you are a very serious fan.
