Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is a fine collection, comprising six full Johnny Cash albums from the period 1958-1962, presented chronologically, along with a number of bonus tracks from around the same period.

The six albums are "The Fabulous Johnny Cash", "Hymns", "Songs Of Our Soul", "Ride This Train", "Now There Was A Song!", and "Hymns From The Heart", and it is good to be able to hear them in their entirety, rather than the same half-dozen or so tracks from each album, which seem to turn up on every compilation these days. Because so much of Johnny Cash's material has now fallen out of copyright, there are any number of cheap and nasty Johnny Cash compilations being released by amateur, fly-by-night record companies more interested in the money than the music. As RCA did with the similarly titled "The Real Elvis" compilation released the same day as this, Columbia (as part of the Sony Group) have included a number of tracks which are still under copyright, as they are the rights holders. Obviously other record companies can not release such material. This, along with the clear, sharp mastering, marks this set out as a cut above all of these other efforts.

The music on this is exactly what you would expect - 88 (YES EIGHTY EIGHT TRACKS!) fine performances from one of the finest, most recognisable voices in American music history, deservedly now ranked alongside the all-time greats. The collection pre-dates many of his biggest hits, but there are still a great many familiar songs on here - "I Still Miss Someone", "Don't Take Your Guns To Town", "Five Feet High And Rising", "I Walk The Line", "Get Rhythm", and many many others.

If you don't already have any Johnny Cash music, or if you only have the hits or the more recent American Recordings, you really should buy this collection without delay - at this price you couldn't possibly go wrong!

Excellent review by "Needanewnickname". Just wanted to endorse the last point: what value! The first five albums alone would cost you over £20 bought individually, and Hymns from the Heart does not appear to be available elsewhere on CD at all. Nice one Sony. Keep em coming!

I had three of these albums (Now there was a song, Songs of the soil, Ride this train) on vinyl and later upgraded Ride this train to CD when it appeared in the boxed set Come along and ride this train. I was in no particular hurry to upgrade the others to CD until I bought The Rebel, then discovered that some of the songs I liked but had forgotten were among the tracks to found here, along with plenty of others.

Apart from Now there was a song, Songs of the soil and Ride this train, this set includes two albums of hymns and The fabulous Johnny Cash. All six were originally released on vinyl in the period 1958 to 1962, along with 13 of the bonus tracks. The 7 bonus tracks at the end of CD 3 are older recordings, made for Sun between 1955 and 1957.Note that not everything he recorded between 1958 and 1962 is featured here. Some singles were released during that period but not featured on the albums.

Some people regard the early recordings to be found in this triple CD as the best Johnny recorded and it's easy to understand why. I love all the music here, but I also love a lot of the music he recorded later in his career including some of his seventies albums - and some of those still haven't been released on CD, although they are available on MP3.

For anybody starting a Johnny Collection, this or The Rebel are both excellent budget releases, though I'd give the edge to The Rebel as it includes more of his classics overall. Comitted fans may want both depending on what is already in their collection.

At the back of his brick-sized biography of the late, great country star - Johnny Cash: The Life - Robert Hilburn provides an overview of his long musical career. According to him: "Without a strong guiding hand in the production booth during his early years at Columbia, Cash stumbled a lot as he tried to plot his musical course." This rather hazily-named, but very cheaply-priced, 3 CD digipak - that shoehorns in 6 largely uncelebrated LPs Cash made for that label between the late 1950s and early 1960s - proves that point. Though there are some very fine performances scattered amongst the likes of Songs of Our Soil, and Hymns By Johnny Cash, such as 'Five Feet High And Rising' and 'It Was Jesus', it hardly adds up to the "ultimate" tag of the subtitle. You can sense that the compilers of The Real... Johnny Cash might feel that deep down as well: they have included 6 familiar tracks from his earlier work for Sun as a fillip. Unnfortunately, excellent mid-1950s hits like 'I Walk the Line', and 'Folsom Prison Blues,' show up most of the lesser-known, traditional country covers and gospel material featured here.

Johnny Cash always enjoyed a prolific recording career but, since his death in 2003, the ressisues and repackages have been phenomenal but none can beat this set for exceptional value. Containing six albums originally released in the late 1950s/early `60s (The Fabulous Johnny Cash, Hymns, Songs of Our Soil, Ride This Train, Now There Was A song and Hymns From The Heart), plus 20 bonus tracks, adding up to a total of 88 original recordings all for £3.00 (at the time of this review). It's a collection that presents varied aspects of his work, from the familiar Sun/Tennessee Two sound of I Walk The Line, I Got Stripes and Folsom Prison Blues to hardcore country on reprises of such (non-Cash) classics as Time Changes Everything, Transfusion Blues and I Will Miss You When Go, plus hymns that underlined his faith and rail and Americana songs that often supported personal causes. Mastered from original Sun and Columbia recordings, this is a 3 cd set that's far too good to be overlooked even if you already have some, or all, of the selections. Snap it up whilst it's still on the market - it can hardly be bettered!
