5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource 5 May 2014

This is one of the best resources for source material on topics of Late Antiquity. I've used this several times throughout my classes i college as a source for research papers. The information is expertly categorized by topic and the book has a very helpful index.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passages from Augustine to Zeno 12 Jan. 2012
By Bridgette Eichelberger - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Readings in Late Antiquity is a compilation of relevant readings that provide reasonably accurate snapshots of the Late Antique period. Many of the readings are works by authors recognizable to even non-historians, such as Muhammed, St Patrick, Gregory the Great, Emperor Justinian, and passages from the Quran.

I was glad to see that Readings in Late Antiquity doesn't ignore the changes that occurred in the Middle East, especially the rise of Islam, and contains a number of readings pertaining to the topic. However, the Middle East is by no means the focus, and Readings does a good job of mixing Roman-esque authors like Vegetius, religious authorities, and government communications.

The editing was very well done. I never thought that the the passage selected was unrepresentative of the work, or that editing skewed the intent of the original. Supremely helpful introductions to each section and each passage provided the big picture and connected the dots between readings.

All in all, a very informative and well-edited compilation.
