Any teacher of young children could benefit from the reading of this book. Every chapter focuses on different aspects of early reading and writing. Marie offers practical suggestions for teaching problem solving while reading(a must for at-risk readers!), teaching writing, vocabulary, and even phonemic awareness. I have been trained in Marie's strategies and find that the book is easier understood if you are studying it with the help of a teacher leader, but I used it before my training and found it very useful then also.

4.0 out of 5 stars 21 yr old book still re 8 Jun. 2014

There is much research and whole organizations with annual conference around Reading Recovery. However, this New Zealand author and her intervention program (after the first year of school) is still widely used in American schools to help "struggling readers." Personally, I prefer a more multi-media, multisensory approach, but the strategies in this books are very systematic and probably work well. I was curious to know what all the "hoopla" is about. What surprised me are a few comments about preventing reading difficulties in advance. Clay is an advocate of universal pre-school plus special attention to English Language learners. She was ahead of her time and sadly, some of her recommendations have still not been implemented two decades later.

5.0 out of 5 stars The approach taken by this program is a proven winner with older and younger students from Kindergarten to grade 8 7 Feb. 2013

Reading recovery is a spectacular resource for all teachers who teach reading in their literacy block and/or in the content subjects. Although the program targets individual students in the primary division, the strategic planning and work is adaptable for students from kg to grade 8. I refer to it on an ongoing basis as I work with students who are raising their confidence levels around critical consumption and production of text. Couple this text with Alan Luke's work on the Four Resources/roles of the Literate Learner and students' interactions with text will just soar no matter where their starting point is.

This book is fantastic for finding a good, holistic approach for language intervention for emergent literacy as well as more advanced literacy levels. Also the condition in which I received the book was good.
