This provides a detailed and visually pleasing guide to the majority of architectural formats throughout the world. As a PhD Medieval Archaeology student, this provided useful insight into interpreting medieval castles and churches/cathedrals. The key strength of this book rested in its structured approach to interpreting architecture, with numerous sections of individual aspects of buildings such as roofing materials, mouldings, doorways, and arches being particularly interesting. However, the reason this book did not get 5 stars was that it lacked specific details on classical and medieval architecture. This can be expected, but as an architecture book, one would expect significant detail to be given to the cathedrals etc.
Visually, the clear and concise drawings are pleasant to look at, and the descriptions of each architectural feature are sufficient in detail and can be easily understood.
This is an excellent guide to architecture in general, just be aware that some details (albeit minor) may be lacking. If you are a medieval or architectural historian, this is a useful general guide to architecture, though for specific detail on more refined forms of architecture such as Roman, Greek, Renaissance etc, perhaps you should look elsewhere. Otherwise, this is an excellent book that will more than suffice for anyone with even a meagre interest in architecture.

From the Inside Flap
This innovative and unique book is a visual guide to the buildings that surround us, naming all the visible architectural features so that, unlike other architectural dictionaries, the reader doesn't have to know the name before looking it up. Clear line drawings and extensive colour photographs illustrate each of the main building types, from forts to churches, stately homes to skyscrapers. The individual structural elements and materials common to all buildings are then explained, whether in Classical, Gothic or Modernist style, before delving into the inner architectural details such as doors and windows, roofs and staircases. A comprehensive glossary completes the book. An original and accessible take on the architectural dictionary, this book takes you on a visual tour of the buildings around us, and will be useful not only to students but to anyone with a general interest in architecture.
